Whether you like them or not, some big changes are coming to Southwest Airlines very soon.

Southwest made headlines when it announced its open seating policy would end this year. The airline made even bigger waves when it announced that it would no longer allow free checked bags. Unfortunately, this policy change starts VERY soon.
Earlier this year on March 11th, Southwest announced that after over fifty years, it would end the lauded “bags fly free” policy that allowed passengers two free checked bags when flying with the airline.

The airline did note that it will continue to offer two free checked bags to their Rapid Rewards A-List Members and others who book seats with Business Select. According to Southwest, regular A-List Members, Rapid Reward credit card members, and other select passengers will be able to check one bag for free.

The change officially takes effect on May 28th, 2025.

Back in September 2024, Southwest CEO Bob Johnson reiterated that bags would continue to fly for free, so this policy shift comes as a MAJOR surprise.
As we previously mentioned, this wasn’t the only change Southwest Airlines announced. Also beginning May 28th, Southwest is removing its open seating feature, which was admittedly a huge draw among potential flyers.

Additionally, Southwest is adjusting it Rapid Rewards points system. Members will earn more points when booking Business Select prices, but will earn fewer points if booking Wanna Get Away or Wanna Get Away Plus options. Flight demand will also factor into point redemption.

How will these upcoming Southwest Airlines policy changes affect your travel plans? Let us know in the comments!
I only fly SWA. My anxiety about flying was helped by choosing where I sit. But now I will try out other airlines since SWA will be just like them
The 2 bags fly free is what set Southwest Airlines apart from other airlines. This is going to make it less competitive. I know it won’t be at the top of my list now.
Your checked bag fees are a real turn off, depending on how much you plan to gouge us i may have to look at flying a different airline. I don’t care about assigned seating but you have really soured me on your airline with your ridiculous fees and now you will give less rapid reward points for the I want to get away price? How long until you screw us over on getting free carry ons?
I booked my flight first week of March. The lady who helped me book the flight said I am entitled to check in 2 bags free. Then Southwest announced the new rules about free bags and new seating arrangement. I called Southwest airlines and asked how am I going to be affected by the new rules. I was assured by the person who answered the phone that I won’t be affected at all. I hope ? so.
You booked in March but when is your flight? I also just booked a flight in March for November 2025 and it says i’m entitled to two free bags. I hope so too!
