Across the nation, vaccine eligibility has begun to widen and vaccination rates have been on the rise.

And, as we approach the deadline in which President Biden is requiring that every state make all adults eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, experts are now looking to identify how long the vaccine will prove effective against the virus. And, recent reports are suggesting that a booster shot may be necessary in the future.
According to NBC News, Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer, shared that people will “likely” need to receive an annual dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, much like the flu vaccine. The company has been working with BioNTech to study how long the vaccine provides immunity and is using their findings to determine whether a booster shot will be needed.

And, Pfizer isn’t the only vaccine company considering the need for additional shots in the future. Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel shared in an interview with CNBC that they are in the process of creating a shot that would combine the COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccine into one.

This comes as many states are still in the process of distributing the first two doses of the vaccines to adults with the goal of increasing the vaccination rate.
