Why Aren’t More People Watching ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ on Disney+?

If you’ve been keeping up with Disney news, then you know that the company just released a new film not too long ago — Raya and the Last Dragon!

The movie tells the story of a girl named Raya attempting to reunite her kingdom after a plague. It released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ premier access, offering fans a choice of how they’d like to watch. We were curious to find out just how popular these two options are, so we reached out to our readers!

We polled our Instagram followers to find out how they’ve been watching Raya and the Last Dragon, and we found that more than 3/4 of the people who watched the movie, watched it on Disney+.

How did you watch Raya?

HOWEVER, there were still thousands of followers who hadn’t seen the movie. In fact, 80% of our followers hadn’t, so we asked a follow-up question: “If you haven’t seen Raya, why not?” We gave our readers 3 options to choose from, as well as a write-in choice.

By far the most popular answer was that the movie was “too expensive” to watch on Disney+. Around 2400 readers gave that as the primary reason why they hadn’t seen Raya and the Last Dragon. If you want to watch it currently on the streaming service, you’ll have to pay a fee of $29.99 for premier access until it becomes available for free on June 4th.

Over 500 readers said that they hadn’t seen it because they “weren’t interested” and around 150 shared that they didn’t want to go to the theater. But we also got several interesting write-in answers. One person said they hadn’t seen the movie because they were saving it to watch as a family for Mother’s Day in the UK.

Another follower sent us a message sharing that they would rather purchase the movie outright on iTunes instead of paying Disney+ and only having access through the streaming service. We also had a few fans who were interested in watching when it’s available for free on Disney+ but didn’t want to pay extra to watch before then.

Other responses included one person who was saving it to watch on a long flight and another who was waiting for the crowds to die down in theaters. But even though many people haven’t seen Raya and the Last Dragon, several who had were singing its praises. One mom said that her family had seen it in theaters AND on Disney+, that her kids had loved it so much they’d watched it three times already!

  1. $30 is not an outrageous fee for a movie. A family of four would pay much more than that for movie tickets, popcorn and drinks. Plus you get to watch this fine film in the comfort of your home. For as many times as you would like. It’s totally worth it because the movie is kind of unforgettable. Like Frozen but no songs. We saw it at the theater. Then bought the movie to see at home again and again. Why in the world? It’s a fast paced well written touching funny sad happy surprising story. Our girls are six and ten. They proclaimed they were not interested in seeing Raya and the Last Dragon. It was on our tv and it caught their eye. They were mesmerized. They love the dolls. Barbie herself was riding on the back of the dragon today! Disney has a winner with Raya. The girls begged to watch it again the next day

    1. Not so much if you do the math. My family of 4 got to watch it. At $30, that’s considerably less than a trip to the theater.

    2. I kinda feel like it’s important to support the movie makers. They are trying to find a way to recover some income off their investment If i were willing to go to a theater, i wouldn’t pay the $30. This makes the most of a bad situation. They lose less money, and i get to see something new…
