Netflix Hopes to Add More Family Animation Content to Compete With Disney+

2021 is looking to be a big year for Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+.

The Walt Disney Company plans to add more than 100 new titles to their Disney+ library every year, and those titles will include hits from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and more. We’re expecting a LOT of new movies this year alone, many of which are sure to be big hits with family audiences. Disney has been great at creating family-friendly content to draw in the masses, and now it seems that their competitors are looking to do the same — namely, the streaming giant Netflix.

According to Business Insider, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has shared that the company has plans to compete with Disney in the world of family-related animation content.

As he discussed Disney+’s success, Hastings said “It is going to be great for the world that Disney and Netflix are competing show by show, movie by movie.” He continued to say, “And we’re very fired up about catching them in family animation, maybe eventually passing them, we’ll see.”

Netflix has recently passed 200 million paid subscribers, while the last numbers we heard from Disney+ were a subscriber count of around 86 million. Netflix is known for having hit original series, and Disney+ has already ventured into that territory with shows like The Mandalorian and WandaVision. Similarly, Netflix plans to take on Disney’s specialty by creating more content that the whole family can enjoy.

We’re interested to see what Netflix comes up with going forward. Disney’s most recent animated hit, Pixar’s Soul, came out on Christmas day. The movie has been incredibly successful and has already won awards. Netflix certainly has a challenge ahead of them!
