Tips about Laundry

We just came back from Disney and wanted to share this tip with people who do laundry while at a resort. We saved our quarters and went to do a load of wash, but when we arrived, you needed your credit card to activate the machines. There were two washers that used change, but all the rest required a credit card. This was also true for the dryers. - Kathleen

My daughter is severely allergic to some laundry detergents, so much so that she ended up in the ER twice in July covered in hives from head to foot due to allergic reactions when we were on vacation. The first night we were at our Disney hotel last week I noticed her scratching and moving around a lot. I quickly realized the sheets were bothering her, even though we have stayed at Disney on many other occasions without issue. The next morning I went to Guest Services and they were only too happy to change out all the bedding on our beds with items washed in a specialty detergent designed for those with sensitive skin. From then on she slept peacefully and I didn't have to be concerned that this vacation would once again send us to the ER! One more reason to love Disney! - Catherine

I always pack a collapsible hamper on our trips to Disney World and, more recently, on a Disney cruise! At the end of our stay, I dump all the dirty clothes into one piece of luggage, which goes straight to the laundry room when we return home! The hamper really helps keep those rather smallish Disney rooms as tidy as possible! - Angela

Shades of Green - The laundry facilities at Shades of Green only accept tokens, not actual quarters. We learned that the hard way when we brought down about $12 in quarters last summer. You must purchase tokens from the change machines in each laundry room to do your laundry there. On the plus side, the kids had a blast at the arcade with those leftover quarters! - Teri Biebel

We had planned to do laundry during our week-long stay at the Art of Animation resort, so we made sure to bring along a few rolls of quarters. However, we discovered you don't need them anymore! There is a computerized system similar to an ATM that allows you to pay with your card! You slide your card in and tell the computer which washer/dryer you are using, and it authorizes the machine to start up! Just make sure all your clothes and detergent are inside and ready to wash before paying. - Jason

We just returned from six days at Disney last week and one thing I wished for time and again was a wooden clothes dryer to lay our bathing suits and shower towels on. We stayed in Coronado Springs, and with four in one room, there just isn't enough room to hang anything up to dry! The clothes dryer would've been easily movable (and collapsible). Of course this would only work if you were driving! - Lynette Hawley EDITOR'S NOTE: Most resorts now have drying cords in the shower that extend the length of the tub.

I also bring on of those pop-up hampers that you can get for like $4. That way we can keep the dirty clothes separated. They have nice handles so I can take the whole hamper to the laundry room and throw a load in when the kids are swimming and then bring them back to the room. - Jamie

I stumbled upon a new laundry item last week and immediately thought of Disney. Purex now sells an "all in one" laundry sheet. The sheet has detergent and softener embedded in it, so that it releases in the washer, then you toss the clothes into the dryer WITH the sheet, which has an anti-static strip that is heat-activated. I could definitely see putting a few of them into a zipper-top bag and taking them along for doing laundry at the resorts. I have tried them at home and they work really well. I don't think the dryer sheet is as effective as others, but its definitely worth the convenience and not having to lug all those products along, or to have to pay premium prices for them at the resort. - Melanie Weekes

Why do chores on vacation? We designate a "Dirty Laundry" suitcase. During the week we pile up the dirty laundry in a large bag, then when it's time to go, one of the larger suitcases gets emptied and everyone puts their dirty clothes in one suitcase. That way when we get home all I have to do is bring that suitcase into the laundry room and unload just that one, knowing that all other bags have clean clothes and souvenirs in them. The kids can just load these back in their drawers. - Jamie

For laundry, purchase and pack a mesh pop-up hamper. It was so nice to have a place to put our dirty laundry and just carry it by the handles down to the laundry room. They hold quite a bit of laundry and some even have pockets that you can stash some fabric softener sheets in. They are easy to fold back down flat for the trip home. - Jenni Miller

I picked up a couple tips from other people on my recent trip. One was for laundry. I put one garbage bag, a few dryer sheets and some laundry soap in an airtight container. Then I had everything together for wash time. The other tip was for the bathroom. I bought a see-through plastic shoe rack. I kept all my bathroom items in it like hairspray, shampoo, brush and so on. It kept everything off the counter and it was easy to see each item. You hang the shoe rack in the closet. In order to save on the extra bag charges and overweight charges, we often plan out a few interchangeable outfits and then just wash them while we are there. We found a laundry detergent called "Drop-ins". They are pre-measured pods that you just throw in the laundry (just like the dish detergent gel packs). They are small and light -- the only thing you need to do is make sure you pack them in a hard container like a tupperware, so they don't burst, or you will be doing laundry as soon as you get to Disney! I have found them at Target and at Shoprite. You can also order them online from Wal-mart, Target, Amazon, and their own website. Add a few fabric softener sheets and you're all set! - Lisa Ruiz

If you don't mind doing laundry while on vacation, here's a tip. I bring along two pillow cases for dirty laundry -- One for cold water items and one for hot water items. Each night the dirty clothes go in one of those pillow cases. When it's time for laundry, no sorting is necessary and the pillow cases go right in the wash with the clothes. An added benefit is that it helps keep our room a lot neater, too. - Danyelle Letendre

If you pretreat a stain on your clothes, beware of detergents containing bleach. On our honeymoon trip to WDW, I treated a pair of my shorts with a detergent containing bleach and threw them into a Ziploc bag, thinking I would launder them when I returned home. After I washed my clothes, I noticed several faded blotches on my shorts. Because the detergent sat on my clothes for a few days without being washed, it faded my shorts. If you do treat a stain, make sure to wash your clothes as soon as possible. - Alisa Kemmerer

This year I brought the Tide to Go pen on our trip. It was easy keeping my children's clothes spotless for those family vacation photos, and this pen really worked well. It worked fast and it was easy to store -- fanny pack, purse, back pocket, stroller, even in our camera bag. - Ashleigh Baas
