Things are certainly changing in the theme park world.

Some changes are exciting and have people buzzing with anticipation, like the opening of Universal Epic Universe coming up on May 22nd or the new Villains Land coming to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, but other news has fans disappointed. For example, Six Flags just announced that its fully closing TWO of its parks in the United States at the end of the 2025 season.
According to BusinessWire, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation has made the decision to close Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Bowie, Maryland after the 2025 season concludes. This is part of the company’s “ongoing portfolio optimization program” and will be listed for sale by CBRE.

The property is nearly 500 acres and will be marked for redevelopment. Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said, “As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan. After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio.”

Essentially, what it sounds like is that selling the land will bring in more money than the parks were. This also means that all the employees who work at the park will soon be out of a job, and the company recognized this, saying, “Six Flags is committed to supporting all impacted associates through the closure process at the end of this year.” The park currently has about 70 full-time employees on its roster, and severance, as well as other benefits, will be offered to them. The park’s last day of operation is set for November 2nd, 2025.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on this closure as it draws closer, and we will continue to keep an eye on the company, as well as the land when it goes up for sale. Stay tuned to AllEars!
