Keeping with Walt Disney’s vision and focus on giving back to children’s hospitals as far back as the 1930s, The Walt Disney Company and National Geographic are continuing his legacy through the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Disney and Nat Geo recently donated 40,000 National Geographic  Kids STEM kits, containing activity kits, toys, and books, to pediatric care centers and children’s hospitals through the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Patients of the Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. were treated to an extra magical event, being the first hospital delivery. Kids and their families were invited to spark their imagination with activities, focusing on STEM, animals, and the environment.

The kiddos got to read Nat Geo’s “Little Kids First Big Book of Why” and play with donated STEM kits, where they grew their own crystals and even dug for dinosaur fossils!

Families were able to watch fun animal clips from Nat Geo’s “Critter Fixers: Country Vets” and meet the star of the show, Dr. Vernard Hodges.

He shared his journey and how he pursued his dreams of becoming a veterinarian, giving the children a behind-the-scenes peek at how a vet uses a stethoscope and checks on animals, using his special therapy dog guests as examples.

Disney and the Starlight Children’s Foundation have had a 20+ year relationship, bringing Disney magic to hospitalized children via their beloved stories and characters.

This is only one of many donations and contributions Disney has fulfilled through Starlight Children’s Foundation. In past years, Disney has granted access to the latest Disney content; gifted Disney-themed hospital gowns and pants; and delivered toys, to name a few.

In October of this year, Disney will share some scary-good fun by donating Halloween-themed toys, books, costumes, and even wheelchair wraps to children’s hospitals and pediatric care centers nationwide, making sure every brave child has a spooktacular Halloween season.

Disney continues to give back to such great causes, and we can see why! We think Dr. Hodges says it best, “to see those smiles, and to see those kids just brighten up when they saw me, brighten up when they got their gifts, brighten up when they saw those animals— I mean, that made my day.”
