UPDATE on the New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Spinoff Movie

Calling all Pirates of the Caribbean fans (the ride AND the movie series)!

Pirates of the Caribbean

A few years ago we learned that a new female-led Pirates of the Caribbean movie was in development starring Margot Robbie, with the script written by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson. Now it looks like there may be bad news for Pirates fans, and here’s what we know.

Plans for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie were announced back in 2020, and it was said that it would be inspired by Disneyland’s attraction, with original Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer returning to the project. However, in the newest issue of Vanity Fair, Margot Robbie revealed that the plans for the new film may have been scrapped.

According to Robbie, Disney is no longer interested in the project. She said, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

The new Pirates movie was said to be a spinoff with all new characters, and Jack Sparrow would not be involved. According to Variety, Jerry Bruckheimer had also said in the past that they were developing two Pirates scripts, with and without Margot Robbie. Bruckheimer has not yet commented on the future of Pirates.
