There’s one way to get a unique “behind-the-scenes” look at Disney rides, and it involves lights.

Disney World rides break down temporarily all the time, and sometimes guests have to be evacuated. If that happens on a dark ride, Cast Members will turn on the lights and you can get a really fun inside look at what the ride looks like in a “new light.” We got a glimpse of the inside of a very dark ride today, so check it out here!
Space Mountain is an iconic indoor roller coaster known for being very, very dark (you’re in “space,” after all!), and it’s not every day that you get to see the roller coaster in bright lights.

We visited Magic Kingdom today and hopped on the PeopleMover, where we were surprised to pass by Space Mountain all lit up! Isn’t it bizarre to see it like this??

The PeopleMover takes you through various areas of Tomorrowland and in one section your ride vehicle takes you through Space Mountain. Usually, you see mostly darkness, but today was a different story.

If you’re ever evacuated from a ride, don’t panic! Cast Members will help escort you safely from your ride vehicle.

Had the experience of being on Space when it broke down once and we were removed from the vehicles. The pic doesn’t do justice to how much empty space there actually is within the mountain. It’s actually a tight cluster of tracks and supporting steel right in the center with huge amounts of empty space off to the sides.
For me, it was interesting, but yes it kind of ruins future rides on it. Walt and his original teams knew how to design the “Magic”. Sad to know there will never be that kind of creativity in Disney again. Thankfully we had the original imagineers and then were blessed with the incredible mind of Joe Rhodes who, IMHO, was a Disney brain like the originals but had the knowledge of modern design to build even better attractions and parks.
