The port has just broken ground on a huge new project that could bring lots more traffic to the area!

Last year, Port Canaveral was voted the Best U.S. Cruise Homeport, and it is no wonder. This Florida port is the second busiest for cruises in the world, behind PortMiami.

But when the cruise industry was paused in 2020, the cargo business became the front and center industry keeping the port afloat. In 2021, Port Canaveral had its biggest year ever in cargo.

According to WKMG-TV., officials just broke ground on a $48 million project to renovate its North Cargo Berth 3 on Dolphin Road at the port. Port officials said the port is being re-done so that it can accommodate today’s larger cargo ships. An 880-foot-long berth will be built, along with other improvements that should be done in about a year.

“We have more cargo that can come here, we just don’t have the facilities and capabilities to handle it right now,” the Port’s CEO, Captain John Murray, told WKMG-TV.
