I Love This Epic Universe Land, But I Could Only Handle Two Hours There

I got to visit Epic Universe for the first time last month, and had the time of my life!

Epic Universe time!!

However, I’ll be the first to admit that I learned A LOT about this new park, especially in terms of sensory information around the park. I’m autistic, and have a lot of issues when it comes to sound, so I paid very close attention to all of that while on my trip so I could report to all of you who may struggle with similar issues! While I loved all the lands in the park, there was one of them that I couldn’t be in for very long without getting overwhelmed.

Super Nintendo World is the only land in Epic Universe that is pre-existing. There’s a version of the land in Universal Studios Japan as well as Universal Studios Hollywood, and all of them are very similar to each other.

Super Nintendo World

The land is bright, colorful, and filled with, you guessed it, LOTS of noise. This was the only land where I really noticed how loud the music is, and paired with the sounds of the mini games and power-up bands, it’s immediately overwhelming from the moment you step inside. Truly, I was filming a video on my phone and had to really project my voice to feel I was easily able to be heard.

There’s a LOT going on here

When you travel up through the portal and up the escalators, you’ll arrive at Peach’s Castle, and I thought this would be a good spot to escape the noise of the land. WRONG.

The music in here is only slightly less intense, but it’s not a quiet spot by any means. I went in to record taste notes for an AllEars video, hoping I wouldn’t have to practically yell, but I was sadly incorrect.

Super Nintendo World!

The worst part, though, is that this means there’s truly NO escape from the noise inside the land. The music changes over in Donkey Kong Country, but it’s just as loud. There’s also a pair of drums that guests can play in an attempt to get the rhino to poke his head out, and that’s going on CONSTANTLY, which drove me a little bit wild.

I also found the queues in this land to be pretty intense, sensory-wise as well. In Mine Cart Madness, it gets pretty echo-y, and near the animatronics in the queue, that gets to be a lot fairly quickly. Over at Yoshi’s Adventure, the sound effects are LOUD throughout the queue, so I was grateful it was a walk-on, and while Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge was the “quietest” of the bunch, the line is often so crowded and the rooms so cavernous (which, design wise, looks amazing) that, again, the echo gets to be too much.

Super fun ride, but the queue can get loud!

I was very thankful I had my Loop Earplugs with me in the land, but even with them in, I could really only handle about two hours in here before I needed to take a break outside. If I didn’t have them, though? I think I’d be lucky to last 45 minutes, tops.

So if you’re traveling to the park and you, or someone in your party, has sensitivity to sound, music, or noise in general, this is the land you’ll definitely want to be the most cautious in. Be sure to stay tuned to AllEars for all the latest Universal Orlando news!

  1. Brilliant observation of how over stimulation does not a pleasant experience make. Keep up the good work!
