I’ve Done Some Frankly Absurd Things for My Job as a Disney World Reporter. Here Are My Top 5.

My job is pretty unique. My list of workplace skills includes things like identifying hidden Mickeys all over Disney World, knowing all the best places to get free water, and reciting full monologues from classic Disney attractions.

As part of my duties as a Disney World reporter, I have gone to some pretty amazing lengths to get the shot, find the scoop, or tell a story. It’s not an easy job! But it’s time I confess some of the most absurd things I’ve done on the job. Let’s settle in for storytime.

1. The time I ate WAY too much Dole Whip

In honor of Dole Whip Day, I went on a wild scavenger hunt all over Disney World. Now, technically, I didn’t have to eat only Dole Whip for the whole day, but let’s just say…I did.

In total, I conquered nine (yes, nine) Dole Whip treats. By the end of it, I was mentally preparing for the worst, a.k.a. a trip to the hospital.

My day started out great, but by the end…well, the effects of an all-sugar diet caught up with me. Did I survive? Yes. I did it. Would I do it again? Probably not. It was a LOT of sugar. But hey, now I can say I am a total Dole Whip EXPERT.

2. Once, I sacrificed my standing in the middle of an AllEars challenge to cover big news

Here’s a funny story. Once, I was deep in the middle of an AllEars TV challenge. I was doing pretty well in the game until I got to Tomorrowland. I got word that after an extended refurbishment, the theaters at Carousel of Progress were about to reopen (with some remodeled changes!!).

I had to pause gameplay mode and do a little investigating because I am a reporter, after all. A Cast Member was able to help me out and let me know when to return to the Carousel of Progress loading area to be among the first on the newly remodeled attraction. After some time, the Cast Member gave me the signal, and I ended up being first in line.

I quickly snapped photos of the theater, gathered what I needed for the story, and was out before most people had even entered. Oh, and no surprise, I lost the challenge!

3. Then there were the times I went to Disney World in disguise

The AllEars team has made some pretty incredible videos in Disney World, and we put a LOT of work into them. We sometimes play hide-and-seek in Disney World, so naturally, on those days I go in disguise.

When I wore this outfit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, things got interesting. Throughout the day, random people would stop me, start up a conversation, and ask me questions like, “Where did you get your shirt?”

These people had no idea who I was, but apparently, my alter ego was a popular guy! People seemed to love him.

4. Yes, I casually ran into Bob Gurr

Once, while reporting in Magic Kingdom, I casually ran into Bob Gurr right in front of Tomorrowland Speedway. If you aren’t familiar with him (which you should be! He’s AMAZING!), Gurr designed the iconic Tomorrowland Speedway cars and many other vehicles in the Disney parks.

I got to stop and have a nice conversation with him, and it was a DREAM moment. It was absurdly cool, and I still think about it sometimes. Bob Gurr is a Disney Imagineering LEGEND!

5. I actually paid for a ride from Port Orleans Riverside to Port Orleans French Quarter Resort

OK, hear me out. Once, I was covering the annual Mardi Gras parade at the Port Orleans Resorts and wanted to catch both the start of the parade at Port Orleans Riverside and the end of the parade at Port Orleans French Quarter.

After covering the beginning of the parade at Riverside, I tried to take a shortcut, thinking I was walking alongside the parade route. It felt like I was walking forever, partly because I was in a rush to catch the big celebration at the end. Eventually, I thought I was approaching the entrance of the French Quarter Resort, only to realize I had made a huge loop and ended up right back at Riverside.

Frustrated, I called a rideshare for the very short drive from Riverside to French Quarter, assuming I’d missed the parade’s arrival. But somehow, I still managed to beat them and got some great content!
