Guests of the theme parks, actors, employees, and more are known to sue the company. Recently, Disney was sued in a wrongful death lawsuit after a guest died at a Disney World restaurant. But now, Disney has been hit with a new lawsuit involving sensitive personal data that was publicly released.

In July 2024, the Walt Disney Company’s internal communications were hacked by a group called Nullbulge. The hacking group had breached the internal software used by Disney (Slack) and published the communications publicly.

Now, the Walt Disney Company has been hit with a lawsuit regarding the hacking incident, according to the Los Angeles Times. The new lawsuit accuses Disney of negligence, breach of implied contract, and other misconduct, including “violating privacy laws by not doing enough to prevent or notify victims of the extent of the leak.” The suit was filed on Thursday, October 3rd, in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Disney and Disney California Adventure.

Those suing the company are those who gave “highly sensitive personal information” to Disney for employment with the company. This information was allegedly comprised in the breach. Examples of information leaked, according to the Wall Street Journal, were passport numbers, visa details, birthplaces, and physical addresses of Disney Cruise Line employees. There were also instances of addresses and phone numbers of cruise line passengers.

According to the complaint, the complainants “remain, even today, in the dark regarding which particular data was stolen, the particular malware used, and what steps are being taken, if any, to secure their [personal information] going forward.” They “are, thus, left to speculate as to where their [data] ended up, who has used it and for what potentially nefarious purposes.”

Plaintiff Scott Margel is pressuring the Disney company to reinforce its security system and educate those involved about the risks of the breach. He is also looking for unspecified damages and a jury trial.
