We’re keeping an eye on the weather.

While summer might be wrapping up, hurricane season is still in full swing. Therefore, we’re keeping a lookout on weather reports in both the Atlantic region and the Gulf of Mexico that may indicate any storms making their way towards Central Florida.
Currently, there are three systems of interest that caught our eye.
The first is an area of low pressure just off the coast of Texas in the Gulf. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), “the system will meander near the coast, possibly developing further if it stays offshore long enough. The system is expected to move inland Tuesday, and development is not expected after that.” However, even so, the agency specifies that “heavy rains and flash flooding is possible over the next few days.”

Moving over to the Lesser Antilles, an area of thunderstorms and gusty winds is building in the waters near Puerto Rico. According to the NHS, “environmental conditions are expected to become more conducive for development when the system reaches the western Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico later this week and into the weekend, which is when a tropical depression could form. Formation chances remain low for now (near 0%), but jump to 40% in the next seven days, which is considered “medium.”
Finally, in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, a tropical wave off the coast of Africa is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. According to the NHC, “a tropical depression could form in a few days as the system moves west-northwestward.”

The agency further specifies that the system “could produce areas of heavy rain and gusty winds across portions of the Cabo Verde Islands” and that while formation chances remain “low at 10% for the next 48 hours. However, that chance becomes 40% in the weeklong forecast.”
The National Hurricane Center was founded in 1963, and according to its mission statement, the organization is to “save lives, mitigate property loss, and improve economic efficiency by issuing the best watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather and by increasing understanding of these hazards. The NHC vision is to be America’s calm, clear, and trusted voice in the eye of the storm and, with its partners, enable communities to be safe from tropical weather threats.”

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1st, and will end on November 30th 2024. As of early September, the system has produced 5 named storms (Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, and Ernesto) and has caused at least 94 fatalities and at least $8.915 billion in damages.

We’re keeping an eye on hurricane-season developments near Central Florida. Stay tuned to AllEars for further weather updates.
