If you had plans to fly into or out of Orlando recently, you might want to be triple-checking your plans (and maybe working on some backup plans as well).

If there’s anything predictable about the rainy season for Central Florida. In that case, it’s that you can always plan for inclement weather to interfere with your plans to travel and sometimes it’s not a specific airline to make the call but rather the Orlando International Airport itself.
MCO has issued an important announcement for all flights in and out of their airport. In their weather alert, they’ve advised travelers to be aware of airline operations that could be affected by the inclement weather including flight and baggage delivery delays.
Weather Alert ⛈️ Due to weather conditions, airline operations may be impacted – flight/baggage delivery delays may occur. Please check with your airline directly for any updates regarding their operations. For airport status, visit: https://t.co/vm0yMYHkcv. Thank you.

At the time of writing this article, MCO has also issued a ground stop for all airline transportation through their airport. The reason listed for the stop is “due to thunderstorms”.

Thunderstorms are fairly common to experience in Orlando around this time of the year, and usually, are shortly lived. We’re hoping that the ground stop will be lifted soon, but until then, you’ll want to keep watch for updates from the FAA and your airline. It’s important to keep in mind that when choosing to travel to Orlando during the rainy season, these kinds of delays can happen and you’ll want to plan for their potential to affect your travels when choosing your flights ahead of finalizing your plans.

It also doesn’t hurt to always have a contingency or backup plan in case your delay becomes significant enough or results in cancellation. We’d also advise familiarizing yourself with your airline’s policies regarding refunds and cancellations well in advance to keep your travel interruptions (and arriving at your destination timely and safely). We’ll be keeping watch over these groundings and make you aware of any significant updates to come.
