REVIEW: Is This Hidden Bread Pudding at Disney’s Port Orleans Hotel BETTER Than ‘Ohana?!

Who else lives to eat at Disney World restaurants?

We’re not just talking about the restaurants in the parks. Some of the best restaurants on the Walt Disney World property can be found in the resorts! If you happen to be staying at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, you’ll likely stumble across Boatwrights Dining Hall. Here, you’ll find family-friendly American dishes inspired by Southern Louisiana cooking! Today we’re headed to check them out!

As we said, we headed over to Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside to enjoy 6 items from Boatwrights Dining Hall‘s menu!

We got things started off by ordering two appetizers. First up, we have the French Onion Soup Au Gratin for $10! This soup has Gruyère Cheese, Onions, and a Toasted Crouton in a rich Beef Broth reminiscent of Pierre D’Orr’s Home Village.

We absolutely loved this! This one felt like a homemade comforting version. It wasn’t the fanciest but the broth was so flavorful and the cheese wasn’t too pungent. It was super savory and had a great cheese pull. Our only complaint is that we wished there was more!

Next, we have the Pimento Cheese Fritters for $12. They are exactly what you can imagine — House-Made Pimento Cheese Fritters.

These fritters were SO GOOD. The fritters themselves were nice and crunchy on the outside with a great amount of pimento cheese in them, but the best bit (by far!) was the pepper jelly. The jelly was INCREDIBLE! So creamy, flavorful, and slightly sweet. They had the tiniest bit of heat but that only added to the overall flavor. Our only note is that we wish there had been more of the jelly.

Moving right along, we had come to the entrées. Let’s start with Boatwright’s Jambalaya. It comes with slow-cooked Spicy Shrimp, Andouille Sausage, and Chicken served with Rice.

Overall this dish was pretty good! We had higher expectations. The rice was flavorful and the shrimp was massive. The sausage had a nice bit of heat and could be considered as “Disney spicy” (the main flavor was tomato). It was bright but we found that the tomato mixed with the slightly undercooked green onion almost gave it a salsa vibe. Overall it was fine but we wouldn’t say it’s a must-have.

Next up, let’s talk about the Shrimp and Grits. They come with sustainable Shrimp and Andouille Sausage served with Spicy Cream Sauce over Creamy Charleston-style Grits.

First up — WOW! This dish was HEAVY (but in the best way possible). The sauce was SO creamy and savory. The shrimp were huge and the sausage had a tiny bit of heat. The grits did clump up a bit the longer we had it, but they were really fine and headed onto the sauce well. Overall a great dish, but truth be told, we still prefer the Shrimp and Grits at Homecomin’

For our last entrée, we had the Taste of the Bayou All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Platter. This platter comes with Hickory-smoked Pork Ribs, Crispy Cajun Chicken, Smoked Sausage, Barbecued Beef Brisket, Mashed Potatoes, Mac & Cheese, Roasted Corn with Cajun Butter, and Seasonal Vegetables.

It’s so rare to find a single all-you-can-eat option, so we loved seeing it on the menu. First, the Mac and cheese was AMAZING! It was similar to the creamy mac and cheese we love at Gasparilla Island Grill in the Grand Floridian, but better with garnishes and bread crumbs on it. The green beans were fresh but nothing really special. The brisket had a great sauce and some pieces were perfectly juicy, but others were dry (so not super consistent). The ribs were fine (very similar to the brisket). The chicken was surprisingly VERY good. The breading had tons of herbs and flavor and it was very crispy. The mashed potatoes were also very nice too (we couldn’t stop eating them)! They had chunks of potatoes but were still smooth and garlicky.

For our last dish, we just had to have some dessert, so we settled on the Praline-Bourbon Bread Pudding, which comes with Pecan Praline Sauce, Bourbon-soaked Raisins, and Vanilla Ice Cream.

This lil’ guy was THE STAR of the show. It had lots of sauce and pecans on top. The breading was so soft and kind of dense (but in the best way possible). It’s not the most amazing bread pudding in Disney World, but it was comforting and tasty. Our only note is that we would’ve liked more breading. For our next trip here, the staff recommended that we have the Banana Cream Pie Cheesecake (so stay tuned for that!).
