A magical Disneyland show is about to disappear…

Since Avengers Campus first opened at Disney California Adventure, the Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts show has been a key part of the land. The show — which saw the titular Sorcerer Supreme summon other Marvel characters like Thor, Captain Marvel, and America Chavez to the land — took place in a dedicated themed area and often drew large crowds. However, its days are numbered.
This week, Disney announced that the show would be closing as of June 30th. Currently, the show is scheduled for six performances through that date on the Disneyland entertainment calendar.

However, interestingly, the show’s page itself has seemingly been scrubbed from the Disneyland website, with its description replaced with one for the Ancient Sanctum area of Avengers Campus where the show was staged.

According to Disney’s description of that area, “Explore the ruins of a mysterious ancient sanctum and learn the site’s secrets from Doctor Strange.” This seemingly tracks with Disney’s statement on the show’s closure, which read “We continually evaluate our entertainment offerings and make adjustments. Dr. Strange will continue to encounter guests throughout the campus.”

The sudden end of the Doctor Strange show, combined with the removal of the DJ and dancers from the Club Pixar show — a limited-time offering that was part of Pixar Fest — has led some to theorize that the closures are linked to the fact that Disneyland character performers voted to unionize in May, joining their Florida counterparts, who had long been represented by a union.

At the time of the vote, Actors’ Equity Association President Kate Shindle said in a statement, “These workers are on the front lines of the Guest experience; they’re the human beings who create lifelong memories when your kids hug a character, or when your family watches a parade roll by the castle. The next step will be to collaborate with them about improving health & safety, wages, benefits, working conditions and job security.”For their part, Disney said of the union vote, “Whatever the outcome, we respect that our cast members had the opportunity to have their voices heard.”

There is some speculation that previously permanent shows like Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts COULD return once negotiations with the new union are complete, however, nothing is confirmed as such. Stay tuned to AllEars for further Disneyland entertainment updates.
