There’s really no end in sight to all the changes at Disney World, right?

I mean, we’re still seeing all kinds of construction projects from the hotels to the restaurants and the parks (basically the entire Disney World property, really). Now, we’re all for things being refurbished and new and exciting experiences coming to the property, but sometimes those projects don’t always yield the most excellent products, right? Speaking of that, there’s work that has been done on one project in particular that has Disney Adults getting quite worked up about. Let’s have a look at it!
As we were saying, there’s been a lot of (shall we say “spirited”) conversation surrounding some of the recent construction work in the Morocco Pavilion at EPCOT. Take a look at this we can see over on X.com for example:
Overall, the WDI refurbishment of the Morocco pavilion has gone well however we have our first misstep and it’s a big one.
The elaborate planters once handcrafted by the King of Morocco’s artisans has been dumbed down using tile which belongs on the restroom floor at DHS. pic.twitter.com/MAT6E1nzX7

Now, it might have been a bit since you’ve been to the Morocco Pavilion, and you can’t quite remember what the tile looked like before the construction work. For that, let’s have a look at this also on X.com:
For reference, this is what the tile used to look like.

As we were saying, we’re all for the new and exciting stuff coming to every corner of the Disney World property, but the Disney Adults may be on to something with this one.

Now, we’re not exactly saying that this new tile work belongs only on the restroom floor, but we do agree that this isn’t the move. And we can agree with comments that say that this is a serious downgrade from what was originally there as we can see in this response on X.com:
Holy cow.
While I’m a huge fan of the old school WDW tile pattern aesthetic in many areas at WDW (vs common generic home tiles).
That’s a huge downgrade vs the Moroccan tile artisans in the Morocco pavilion public areas.— PH (@No_Time42) May 28, 2024
Not only is it a downgrade, but it does feel like Disney missed the mark on the importance of it all.
It's not like they didn't have framed photos inside the former Restaurant Marrakesh that said why the detailing was so important. pic.twitter.com/uDZTuBqj1M

That sums it up. This area is a cultural expression and it seems a bit off that Disney would use generic tilework when culturally it has much more significance.
If nothing else, if they were going to be replacing the existing tile, they should have at least made the effort to ensure that the overall look was flawlessly executed.

At the end of the day, Disney is going to do what Disney is going to do, and not every argument Disney Adults make is correct, but in this case, well, we’ll let you be the judge.

They are turning into a cultural appropriation versus a cultural representation. Morocco was so special with its unique shops and many Moroccan representations. It was a great slice of that North African country and was so authentic. It’s a real loss if they continue with it the way they are, worse than turning Norway into a Frozen pavillion.
