Disney Actor Comments on Future Representation in Disney Movies

Disney CEO Bob Iger has said the company strives to tell “stories that reflect the world around us and that foster greater understanding, greater perspective, greater acceptance of all people.”

Princess Tiana, for example, was the first black Disney princess to star in her own movie (and now, she’s even getting her own RIDE in Disney World and Disneyland). Disney films have also recently embraced more diversity by including leading gay characters (for example, America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). However, Disney has not yet introduced a gay Disney princess. One actor, though, thinks that could soon change.

Actor Harvey Guillén, star of What We Do in the Shadows, and most recently, as Gabo in Disney’s Wish, told ComicBook.com that he believes the time will come soon when Disney will introduce a queer princess. When asked about the possibility, Guillén said, “I think they’re making strides in the right direction.”

He added that although it may be hard, he feels that Disney is putting its “best foot forward.” He admitted that these things often take time,  but that he’s “optimistic.” He also said that if Disney introduces a queer princess, “that’d be fantastic.”

Of course, Disney is no stranger to the controversy such a character might cause. In 2022, Disney reinstated a same-sex kissing scene in Lightyear after receiving backlash for removing the the scene. The inclusion of a lesbian police officer in the movie Onward led the movie to be changed for its Russian release and banned in Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

It’s likely Disney would face some controversy if it introduced a queer princess in one of its films, but such a move would also be embraced by the LGBTQIA+ community.
