Have You Ever Wondered Why Cinderella Castle is Pink? Find Out Here!

The most prominent icons that we all think of when we think about Disney, are castles.

Cinderella Castle

Walt Disney loved fairytales. Many of the stories he created, to capture all our hearts and minds, were based on several popular fairytales. One of the most important parts of any good fairytale is of course the castle. They are majestic and beautiful and represent royalty and wealth. And of course, a princess needed her castle. So, Walt decided that his parks needed their main focal point to be, of course, a castle. But where did he get his inspiration from while designing them?

You can see resemblances to a couple of European castles in the large, towering park icons, today. For instance, Cinderella Castle is said to get a lot of its inspiration from Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. The old German peaks are very similar to the famous Cinderella Castle. But Neuschwanstein is certainly not pink, so why are Cinderella Castle and Sleeping Beauty Castle the beautiful colors that they are?

It is believed that Walt Disney got his inspiration for the pink hues from the famous Craigievar castle in Scotland. This beautiful castle has a pink color that has, sadly, been fading away. But according to BBC, it has finally gotten a fresh coat of paint!

According to Gille Young, National Trust for Scotland, the castle should open up to the public in the Spring of 2024! It is a beautiful castle, and we can certainly see similarities, especially in its color. But don’t ask them for the paint recipe so you can paint your own house the same pink — it’s top secret!

It would be amazing to get to visit a castle that inspired the animator, especially one as gorgeous and popular as this one, in Scotland. Perhaps, we’ll have to book a trip to Scotland this coming year!

  1. I agree with Betsy on this. Cinderella Castle was always gray before the 50th anniversary. And I hate the pink. But at least it’s not a big birthday cake again.

  2. Cinderella Castle was originally gray with blue turrets. It was painted pink for the 50th Anniversary. I doubt Walt had anything to do with that decision ?
I’ve never liked the pink version…wish they would return it to the original.
