When it comes to travel, most of us really don’t like sitting on a plane for longer than necessary.

With layovers and indirect routes, sometimes it can feel like it takes ages to get to your destination. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been working for the past seven years to create more efficient routes according to modern aircraft technology that not only lets passengers reach their destinations more quickly but also allows for safer travels in the event of storms.
According to CNBC, the FAA just launched 169 new flight routes that are shorter, faster, and even cut down on air traffic congestion. (You know, the stuff that causes you to sit on the tarmac for a really long time before taking off?) The new routes launched last week, just in time for the busier travel season.

These new routes are the result of a seven-year project of redrawing high-altitude maps for airplanes. Previous routes are being abandoned, since they were longer and “zigzagged” more. The FAA explained that these routes relied on the ground-based radar rather than the GPS that modern aircraft use.

The new routes are considered to be safer due to the paths being over 18,000 feet, which is when planes can simply cruise, as well as have more flexibility when the aircraft encounters inclement weather due to less converging points with other aircraft and more simple flows.

Many of the new routes are located over the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, so even international travel could be positively affected. The FAA projects that the new routes will reduce travel time by 6,000 minutes per year.

The good news for our readers? Many of these new routes are to and from Florida! Perhaps getting to and from Disney World will be even easier with less interruption from the frequent thunderstorms, military activity, and space launches.

Many airlines are celebrating this change, and American Airlines COO David Seymour said in an email statement, “American has long been a proponent of unlocking additional high-altitude routes along the East Coast and we are optimistic they will have significant benefits for our customers and team members.”

For other airlines like JetBlue and United, the more effective routes come as a breath of relief as they’ve already reduced flights to New York City and Washington DC because of the shortage of air traffic controllers within the FAA as an attempt to reduce disruptions.

Hopefully, traveling will become more of a breeze for those of us traveling this summer, especially those who travel frequently for work. We’ll continue to keep you updated with all things Disney and travel news, so make sure to follow along for more.
