Gov. DeSantis Responds to Reedy Creek Board’s Promise to Sue Disney

The Disney vs. DeSantis battle has continued and things are only getting more intense.

Disney recently sued Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the members of the new Board of Supervisors for the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (formerly the Reedy Creek Improvement District) in federal court. DeSantis made some initial comments on that lawsuit, and the Board later responded with a promise to initiate a lawsuit of their own against Disney in state court. Now, DeSantis has spoken on the issue again.

According to Scott Gustin (shared via Twitter), DeSantis was asked about his reaction to the board’s lawsuit announcement during an event and provided a rather lengthy response.

In his response, DeSantis said that “no corporation is above the law” and said, “It’s been very disappointing to watch this particular company, what they’ve done by advocating things like the sexualization of children.” (This seems to go back to Disney’s statement against Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill, which is what started the entire battle.)

DeSantis went on to say that this is a “question about good governance” and talked about Disney’s Development Agreement (which the new board declared invalid and a Florida law may impact soon). DeSantis indicated that the Florida law that would impact the Development Agreement would likely pass the legislature and he would sign it.

DeSantis went on to say that they are “implementing the will of the people” by making certain changes within the District and said that for Disney to “act like they have the ability to veto that basically…is putting their thumb in the eye of the voters of the state.”

DeSantis went on to accuse critics of these Reedy Creek changes as having political or (as he put it) “partisanship” motives. After talking about the legislative actions that he expects will be taken soon, DeSantis said “All they’re trying to do is uphold the will of the people…to make sure that nobody’s governing themselves as a major corporation.” He said that he thinks that is where this will “end up going” and he expects it’s something that’ll be “successful” accomplishing.
