High-speed rail is one step closer to becoming a reality in Central Florida.

Originally, the Brightline train was intended to include Disney World in its route to and from the Orlando International Airport, with a stop in Disney Springs. However, after the proposed route changed, Disney backed out of the deal. However, Central Florida is still getting high speed rail, and it’s now closer to opening!
According to Fox 35 Orlando, Brightline will soon be testing its trains at higher speeds in Central Orlando. This month, trains will travel around 79 mph, but Brightline hopes to increase the speed to 110 mph early next year.

The testing will take place along a 13-mile section of track across 18 railroad crossings. That means Florida drivers might see longer wait times at railroad crossings and should prepare accordingly. There will be flaggers at the affected railroad crossings from 6AM on October 29th through 6 PM November 5th.

The following crossings will be affected:
Sharpes
- Camp Rd.
- Canaveral Groves Blvd.
City Point
- Cross Rd.
Cocoa
- Cidco Rd.
- Beau Gest
- Michigan Ave.
- Dixon Blvd.
- West Highland
- Peachtree St.
- King St. – SR 520
- Rosa L. Jones Blvd. (Poinsett Dr.)
Rockledge
- Barton Blvd.
- Eyster Blvd.
- Rinker Way
- Gus Hipp Blvd.
- Barnes Blvd. (SR 502)
- Carver Rd.
- Ansin Rd.

In a statement, Brightline said: “Residents should be alert, follow the law around active railroad tracks and railroad crossings and be aware that once the second track is commissioned, rail traffic could run on BOTH tracks. Failure to follow the law could result in fines, points on your license or loss of life.”

So does that mean we can just give up on a train to Disney World? Well, it’s still a possibility, but there are a few things that would happen first. But in the meantime, this new high speed rail corridor will allow you to travel around Central Florida faster.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on the progress of Brightline in Central Florida and keep you updated, so stay tuned to AllEars for more.
