NEWS: Orlando Residents Urged To Limit Water Usage After Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian has impacted much of Florida and beyond, but just because the storm has passed doesn’t mean that we’re out of the woods just yet.

Disney’s Polynesian Resort after Hurricane Ian

We’ve taken a look at what Disney World looks like after a hurricane, and have kept up with the latest reopening news for Universal Orlando and Orlando International Airport. But now, Orlando residents are being urged to limit water usage after Hurricane Ian damaged an important part of the city’s infrastructure — here’s what you need to know.

We’ve been keeping up with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, and now the City of Orlando has issued a water advisory for residents after the city’s sanitary sewer sustained damage in the storm. Originally, the advisory was only in effect until 2PM on October 2nd, but the advisory has been extended by the city until further notice.

Multiple “lift stations” were affected by a force main break that caused an overflow of sewage into the surrounding lakes. Residents are being urged to limit water usage in their homes while crews work to make emergency repairs to the system.

It’s important to note, this is not a water boil advisory but a water usage advisory instead.

So, if you’re an Orlando resident, it’s important that you limit flushing toilets, doing laundry, washing dishes, showering, and using irrigation systems until the repairs are completed.

UPDATE: As of Tuesday, October 4th, Orlando is no longer asking the community to limit water use, however they are asking residents to be mindful of water consumption to prevent treatment plants from being overwhelmed.

We’re keeping an eye on this situation and will let you know of any important updates — but be sure to check the City of Orlando’s social media pages for the most up-to-date information.
