What You Can Do to Help After Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian left a swath of destruction in its path, which affected much of the state of Florida.

According to the Associated Press, President Joe Biden declared parts of Florida a major disaster in the wake of Ian’s destruction. If you’re looking for a way to help those impacted by Hurricane Ian, we’ve put together a list of resources.

Here are organizations directly involved in helping those affected by Hurricane Ian:

  • Florida Disaster Fund — this organization funds both response and recovery efforts and distributes money across other Florida organizations. You can make a donation through this link or by texting DISASTER to 20222. You can also look for volunteer opportunities.
  • American Red Cross — You can either make a monetary donation or donate blood to help Florida residents affected by Hurricane Ian. Make a monetary donation here, call 800-RED-CROSS, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

  • United Way — United Way has set up a fund to help those affected by the hurricane. You can donate here.
  • FEMA — FEMA is providing emergency services, debris removal, and other assistance to those affected by Hurricane Ian. You can donate directly here or search for volunteer opportunities.
  • Volunteer Florida — You can make donations here to help those affected by Hurricane Ian or you can find volunteer opportunities to help in other ways.

There are also a lot of supply distributions you can help out with for things like bottled water and tarps — be sure to check with your local county for events like this to see how you can help.

One thing all these organizations stress is to not self-deploy to any of the affected areas. If you want to volunteer to help on the ground, organize that through one of the many organizations that are actively looking for volunteers.
