Human Rights Campaign Accepts Donation From Disney Now That the Company Has “Taken Real Action”

Disney is no stranger to dedicating time, money, and resources to charitable causes. The company works often with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make the wishes of children with critical illnesses come true.

The company also often works with the Give Kids the World organization, among others. However, a donation by Disney to one charity group was  rejected six months ago, and now there is an update in the donation.

The charity in question is the Human Rights Campaign, which is an LGBTQ+ advocacy group. Six months ago, Disney CEO Bob Chapek pledged $5 million to the charity. However, at the time, the Human Rights Campaign rejected the donation, citing it would not accept donations from Disney until the company took action against Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill and similar laws.

Disney eventually did address the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida and pledged to take action. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Human Rights Campaign spokesperson Elizabeth Bibi said the charity would now accept Disney’s donation after discussions with the company after believing that the company has “stood firm” and “taken real action” in support of LGBTQ+ rights.

Bibi wrote in a message: “Over the last several months, we have been having very productive conversations with Disney about the impact of anti-LGBTQ+ laws and policies and what they can do to help our community — specifically, what they can do to make the world safer and more welcoming for LGBTQ+ people, especially the youth and families currently under political attack.”
