NEWS: MoviePass Is Returning With Some BIG Changes — Here’s What You Need to Know

Back in 2017, a theater subscription service debuted that was seemingly too good to be true.

MoviePass allowed subscribers to see up to one movie a day for only $9.99 a month — that’s less than the price of ONE movie ticket at most theaters. Just as the service seemed too good to be true, it turned out that it was. The companies that owned the service filed for bankruptcy in 2020, ceasing the service. However, it’s now been announced that MoviePass will be returning — with a catch.

According to Axios, a beta MoviePass app will be relaunching on or around Labor Day. However, there will be some big differences. For one, the initial app will only be available by signing up for a waitlist, which will open this Thursday August 25th at 9AM EST, closing Monday August 29th.

Joining the waitlist will be the only way to initially access the app. Each person who joins the waitlist will also receive 10 friend invites they’ll be able to use once they access the service. MoviePass has specified on their site that inventory will be limited, so this initial run will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Previous MoviePass members who join the waitlist will receive complimentary bonus credits to their account when they join. Right now, MoviePass lists that launch date as on or around September 5th, 2022, with market availability set to open in waves depending on demand.

As for cost, that’s where users will see the biggest difference from the previous version. Instead of a flat rate $9.99, the new service will offer a tiered subscription of $10, $20, and $30, with each tier able to access a certain amount of credits. Currently, not many details are listed, but more information will be shared upon release.

While more details are still upcoming, we’re curious to see how the NEW MoviePass fares compared to theater subscriptions from AMC, Cinemark, and Regal that have all been formed since MoviePass first went out of business. We’ll share more as further information becomes available, so stay tuned with AllEars!
