If you’ve been secretly hoping for another installment in The Princess Diaries saga, you might be disappointed by this news.

Julie Andrews is an icon in the movie industry, especially when it comes to Disney movies, thanks to her roles in Mary Poppins and both The Princess Diaries movies. She is receiving an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award (one of the highest honors for an actor in film) today due to her contributions to the industry. And recently, she commented on the possibility of a 3rd film in The Princess Diaries series.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Julie Andrews talked about her career in film, including her time as Mary Poppins and Queen Clarisse Renaldi. The original The Princess Diaries movie spawned one sequel: The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, but no other movies were made.

In the two movies, Julie Andrews plays the queen grandmother to Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway. Mia finds out she is a princess of the country of Genovia and must learn how to fill that role in order to one day be crowned Queen of Genovia herself.

When asked if she would revisit these movies in another sequel, Julie Andrews said that the time has passed for that. The original director for the movies, Garry Marshall, passed away in 2016, and Andrews said that — in her opinion — “it’s too far down the line now to go back to it.” So, if you were still holding out hope for another movie, it may be time to move on.

In the interview, Andrews also discussed details she suggested that made it into the movies. For example, fans of the films might remember that Genovia is famous for its pears — that was a suggestion given to director Garry Marshall by Andrews herself!

Loved the original movie; meh on the sequel. I agree with Ms. Andrews that the boat has sailed on this one.
