The DEFINITIVE Ranking of Disney’s Haunted Mansion Characters

Note: This was a literally impossible task that required lots of deliberation and sacrifice because we think every Haunted Mansion character deserves the top spot (except those heads that pop up in the graveyard and scare us, yikes). 

The Haunted Mansion is one of the most iconic Disney rides of all time and for good reason! It has groundbreaking technology, memorable characters, and some amazing tunes (Grim Grinning Ghosts has a guaranteed spot on my Halloween playlist every year, no question).

Today, we’re going to attempt to rank our top ten Haunted Mansion characters! Without further ado, let’s get into it!

The Caretaker is at the bottom of our list, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love him! This spooked groundskeeper is the only living friend we’ve got at the Haunted Mansion, and we love him for it.

In our ninth spot is Sally Slater A.K.A. the Tightrope Portrait. We love all the stretching portraits at the start of the Haunted Mansion, but this one is definitely our favorite! There’s just something about how she’s just walking across the tightrope so casually despite the peril below.

This one isn’t technically a Haunted Mansion character, but she’s too good to not include! Madame Carlotta and her sister, Madame Renata, are the nieces of Master Gracey and come out at the Magic Kingdom during Halloween! They’re iconic characters (and fun to be around!), so we included them on the list.

The eerie beckoning of Little Leota at the end of the Haunted Mansion is enough to earn her the seventh spot on this list. Tiny and adorable but with a creepy twist? That’s the essence of the Haunted Mansion. Hurry baaaaack! Hurry baaaaaaack!

Okay, hear us out on this one. The Caretaker’s Dog. It might seem like an unusual choice, but we feel so bad for that little guy! He deserves something for all his troubles, so he gets the sixth spot.

Alright, enough playing around, it’s time to talk about the heavy hitters. The Hatbox Ghost was a technological puzzle that took Disney’s Imagineers nearly 50 years to solve. This ghost represents a triumph after decades of hard work and experimentation. Plus, he’s just a fun character!

At number four on this list is Constance Hatchaway, who has a reputation for… messy divorces. Notorious for killing all of her past husbands, this character has an interesting backstory and is one of the most legitimately scary characters in the Haunted Mansion.

Although the Hitchhiking Ghosts don’t show up until the very end of the ride, they sure make an impact! In fact, George, Ezra, and Gus are memorable enough to snag a top-three spot on our list, especially with the fun projections at the end of the ride!

The number two spot goes to a character you don’t see, but instead you hear. The Ghost Host is the narrator of the Haunted Mansion and brings the whole ride to life with his descriptions, jokes, and iconic voice.

Madame Leota is our number one Haunted Mansion character because of course. Who else? There are so many reasons to put her on the top spot of our list. First, her likeness is based on legendary Imagineer Leota Thomas (her daughter Kim Irvine, is the face of Leota during the holiday overlay) and she’s voiced by Maleficent herself, Eleanor Audley.

Madame Leota stands as a testament to the innovators and creators who worked on Disneyland and some of Disney’s first feature animated films.

No list would be complete without some Honorable Mentions! This time around, honorable mentions go to the Singing Busts, the Ballroom Ghosts, and the Guy Stuck in a Coffin (voiced by the legendary X. Atencio).
