11 Most Hilariously Awkward Parts of the Harry Potter Books and Movies

If you’ve been following along with AllEars for a while, then you know that we’re BIG Harry Potter fans!

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

We’ve read all the books and watched all the movies (multiple times), and we have quite a few thoughts.

Today, we’re sharing some of those thoughts with you as we break down the most hilariously awkward moments from the books and films — let’s get weird. ?

Moaning Myrtle in the Bath with Harry

Oh yeah, we’re kicking it into high gear right off the bat! Myrtle, hopping in the bathtub with someone is totally not cool, and you made us (and Harry!) very, very uncomfortable throughout this entire Goblet of Fire scene. Just because you’re a ghost doesn’t mean that you can forget your manners and rules of acceptable social conduct!

You may be wondering if it can even get more awkward than this…don’t worry, we’ve still got 10 more to go!

Harry and Hermione’s Fake Kiss

It’s an awkward scene in the book, but watching Harry and Hermione kiss in Deathly Hallows Part I is even worse. Of course, it’s not real — it’s all a Horcrux-induced nightmare for Ron, but, boy, is it weird.

After not-so-patiently waiting for Ron and Hermione to get together, seeing her kiss Harry feels incredibly wrong (even if it IS fake). And it doesn’t help that they’re only partially clothed… ?

Cho and Harry’s First Date

Oh, Harry, we were rooting for you and Cho, simply based on the fact that she was your first real crush. But as most relationships do at 15, things fall apart rather quickly…all starting with that first date.

The scene that takes place at Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop in the Order of the Phoenix book is incredibly cringey. Harry just keeps saying all the wrong things (we can’t blame him — no one ever really taught him how to talk to girls), and Cho attempts to make him jealous in retaliation. Bad decisions all around, ending in many tears.

Rita Skeeter Interviewing Harry

Dear Rita Skeeter, you are truly an awful woman. What kind of person drags a 14-year-old boy into a closet to ask him deeply personal and uncomfortable questions? Quit being weird!

Every time she interviewed Harry, we just felt progressively worse for him, and there was always this impending sense of doom once she took out that Quick-Quotes Quill. Nothing good ever happened when Rita Skeeter walked into the room, and we could just sense Harry’s unease through the screen.

Voldemort Hugging Draco

Ahh, Voldemort — dark wizard, leader of the Death Eaters, and perhaps the worst-ever at physical affection. When he hugged Draco in Deathly Hallows Part II, we all felt exactly like Draco probably did…very, very confused.

This scene just felt oddly out of character for He-Who-Must-Not-be-Named, and we think about it any time we have to hug that one family member at Thanksgiving. (Come on, you know exactly who we’re talking about.)

Ron Ruining Harry’s Attempt to Flirt

In Order of the Phoenix, there’s a book scene where Harry attempts to have a conversation with Cho Chang, but it’s effectively ruined by none other than Ronald Weasley, the world’s worst wingman.

In the middle of Harry and Cho’s chatting, Ron interrupts to ask Cho about her Tornados badge, accusing her of being a fake fan of the quidditch team simply because they’d been winning the league. Cho immediately becomes upset and leaves, and we were left rolling our eyes and agreeing with Hermione — Ron really is “tactless!”

The Entirety of the Yule Ball

What’s more awkward than a group of angsty teenagers in unflattering clothing on dates with the wrong people? NOTHING. The Yule Ball was just a series of bad decisions and cringe-worthy arguments.

If we’d forgotten that we were reading a story about 14-year-olds, we were quickly reminded during Goblet of Fire. Ron and Harry are terrible dates because they aren’t attending the ball with who they really want to be there with — mostly leaving the two of them to sulk grumpily in the corner the whole time.

Most of What Luna Says

Have you ever met a person who doesn’t come with a “filter?” Well, in Harry Potter, that person is clearly Luna Lovegood. She says exactly what’s on her mind and doesn’t give two wand flicks about being socially acceptable.

Between all the made-up words and her propensity for being waaay too honest, many of the things Luna says make our jaws drop wide open. We can’t imagine what it would be like to be her friend in real life — you’d never really know what to expect!

Harry and Ginny’s Movie Relationship

In the books, Harry and Ginny were definite #couplegoals, but in the movies, well, let’s say that there were some moments between the two of them that left us scratching our heads. From Harry zipping up Ginny’s dress to her feeding him with the incredibly awkward line “open up, you,” we found ourselves looking questioningly at the screen more than once.

And don’t even get us started on Ginny tying Harry’s shoes — THAT’S NOT HOW YOU FLIRT, HOMEGIRL.

Dumbledore Asking About the Goblet of Fire

Ask any Harry Potter fan about discrepancies between the films and books, and this infamous scene from the Goblet of Fire film will almost certainly be mentioned. In the book, Dumbledore calmly asks Harry if he put his own name in the goblet, but in the movie…

…well, he comes screaming like a raving lunatic, scaring poor Harry (and all of us) senseless. The scene is so uncharacteristic of Dumbledore, and it definitely goes into the “Awkward Harry Potter Movie Moments Hall of Fame.”

Lavender and Ron’s Entire Relationship

“Won-Won”…need we say more? Everything about Ron’s relationship with Lavender Brown was uncomfortable and weird. She was waaay too obsessed with him, and he was clearly using her to get at Hermione — definitely not grounds for a healthy relationship.

Their romance didn’t last too long; thank goodness, because we couldn’t have handled any more awkward snogging and pet names.
