The late 1990s and early 2000s were a prime-time for new Disney Channel Original Movie releases. And thanks to Disney+, we now have access to enjoy these gems on-demand! Here are eight DCOMs to add to your Disney+ watch list for a kick of nostalgia.

1. Under Wraps

As the first official Disney Channel Original Movie, Under Wraps had to make the list. After all, it kickstarted an era of awesome content! In the film, three kids discover a mummy who comes to life in the moonlight. And after initially being scared (understandably!), the kids soon find that the mummy is a friendly and lovable character. But of course, there’s a twist! If the mummy isn’t returned to his sarcophagus before midnight on Halloween, he’ll disappear forever.

So, throw it all the way back with this 1997 classic to relive where it all began!

2. Halloweentown

From one spooky story to another. Halloweentown is an iconic DCOM that follows siblings Marnie, Dylan, and Sofie, as they discover Halloweentown, the home of their grandma Aggie — played by the incomparable Debbie Reynolds! Marnie is particularly thrilled to learn of the magic that runs in their family, but her mother, Gwen, isn’t so enthusiastic about the kids’ discovery of their lineage.

Originally released in 1998, this movie came quickly on the heels of Under Wraps. And it was a strong addition to the Disney Channel lineup!

3. Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century

This movie was released in 1999, but it takes place in 2049 — hence the 21st century reference in the title! Zenon Kar lives on a space station with her family, but after landing in hot water, she’s sent to live on Earth with her aunt as punishment. There are tons of highlights in this movie — the “space-age” costumes, the song “Supernova Girl” performed by Zenon’s favorite singer Proto Zoa, and an appearance by Raven-Symoné as Nebula.

It’s a very 90s interpretation of the future and we absolutely love it! All we can say is “zetus lapetus!”

4. Smart House

Another 1999 release, Smart House stars Ryan Merriman as Ben Cooper, who fans might recognize from several DCOM appearances. After winning the titular “Smart House” in a contest, Ben thinks that he and his family are set. But the house begins to take on a life of its own, and madness ensues!

And even though this film warns us about becoming too reliant on technology, we still think it would be pretty cool to have a house that could whip up fresh smoothies on command!

5. Johnny Tsunami

Was 1999 the best year for Disney Channel Original Movies? It might just have been, because Johnny Tsunami is another must-watch for a heavy dose of nostalgia. Follow the adventures of Johnny Kapahala, a talented surfer who lives in Hawai’i with his family. When his dad gets a job in Vermont, Johnny has to adapt to a new extreme sport!

Watching Johnny on the waves made us want to learn to surf — and snowboard too, for that matter!

6. Cadet Kelly

Cadet Kelly stars two prolific Disney actresses — Hilary Duff and Christy Carlson Romano. This 2002 film follows Kelly, played by Hilary Duff, as her family suddenly moves and she’s enrolled in George Washington Military Academy. Kelly isn’t exactly a natural fit for life at the academy, and she often clashes with Cadet Captain Jennifer Stone, played by Christy Carlson Romano.

This movie packs a heavy punch of nostalgia. Does anyone else remember wanting a pair of pink camo pants after watching Kelly rock them? Just us?

7. The Luck of the Irish

Another Ryan Merriman film (remember him from Smart House??), The Luck of the Irish follows his character Kyle Johnson, a typically super-lucky teen who suddenly becomes decidedly unlucky. Kyle has to figure out why he can no longer catch a break — and how to fix it! Which is quite a task for someone in junior high.

There might be some less-than-spectacular special effects in this film, but since it’s a made-for-TV movie released in 2001, we’re willing to overlook that!

8. The Cheetah Girls

Since we’re focusing on DCOMs from the late 90s and early 00s, this 2003 film is the newest one on our list. But The Cheetah Girls is too iconic to leave out! The Cheetah Girls are a four-member girl group trying to become the first freshmen to win the talent show at their performing arts high school. But when they meet a big-time producer, things get much more complicated for the girls!

Apparently we weren’t alone in our love for The Cheetah Girls — it was popular enough to spawn two sequels!

We aren’t ashamed to admit that we love the classic Disney Channel Original Movies. If you’re on the hunt for some nostalgic content, add these iconic DCOMs to your Disney+ watch list!

  1. I just searched Disney+ and couldn’t find the movie “Under Wraps.” But I did find info that says Disney is remaking the film and it’s expected to be released for Halloween 2021.
