Just a few months ago, Disney announced that 28,000 of its employees in its Parks, Experiences and Products division would soon be laid off. Recently, that number was increased to 32,000.

Several groups came together to help Cast Members in need and many donated, bought from Cast Member businesses, or tried to give back in some way to those who have helped create so much magic. But, one food bank that was created to help affected Disney Cast Members is now in danger of closing due to a lack of resources.
The UNITE HERE Local 737 Website indicates that Local 737 is a union representing workers in Walt Disney World Food & Beverage and Housekeeping, as well as other employees at places like the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at the entrance to Universal Orlando and more. According to Spectrum News, Local 737 started a food bank in May of this year to help Cast Members in need. But, officials from the union now say they aren’t sure how much longer they’ll be able to keep the food bank open because their resources are very low.

One Local 737 Trustee, Sonja Flowers, said that when the food bank started out with 200 people, it was already a lot of work. But now, they’re helping at least 1,200 people per week, and the resources simply get used up faster. Local 737 is expecting at least another 1,200 cars to visit their weekly distribution this Saturday. According to Spectrum News, Flowers, while looking at a nearly empty food bank said, “It’s disheartening…We need food.”

Many Cast Members impacted by the layoffs also depend on that food every week. Local 737 officials have said that they are taking a big hit financially and spending about $20,000 each week to feed those in need. They need financial support and food donations, and could also use more volunteers to keep their food bank going.

If you’re interested in volunteering or contributing to the food bank, you can contact Local 737 at 407-851-0626. This Saturday, the group will be distributing food at their offices located at 1255 La Quinta Drive, #212, in Orlando, Florida.
