Universal paid many full-time employees for several weeks after the theme parks closed in March. Months went by then the furloughs began. Universal resorted to layoffs, budget cuts, lowered capacity, and shortened park hours in order to stay afloat. As months go by and the health crisis sustains, Universal has chosen to extend furloughs for more employees.

Businesses must notify the state if they choose to furlough or lay off a large number of employees. According to Orlando Sentinel, Universal recently filed to notify of an extended furlough for 5,400 employees.

Universal Senior Vice President of Human Resources Scot LaFerte stated in a letter to officials the reasoning behind the furloughs. “As a full recovery will take time, the Company has had to make very difficult decisions.” He also noted that the furloughs are “until further notice.” Officially, no permanent layoffs have happened to the employees affected by the recent change.
