Hurricane season is already off to a pretty active start as Hurricane Isaias strengthened from a tropical storm into a Category Two Hurricane.

However, there have been a lot of predictions about what the upcoming season may look since both Hurricane Hanna and Hurricane Isaias have hit the U.S. and surrounding islands.

The New York Times has stated that the National Weather Service has updated its hurricane season forecast to a predicted 19 to 25 named storms. While the season runs from June 1st through November 30th, five storms have already hit the United States.

While we’ve seen three tropical storms, Hurricane Hanna, and Hurricane Isaias, the director of the National Weather Service Louis Uccellini said that “It’s shaping up to be one of the most active seasons on record.”

While named storms have sustained winds of 38 miles an hour typically, seven to eleven of the predicted storms could be hurricanes with winds of 74 miles per hour or higher (with three to six major ones). Dr. Gerry Bell of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has stated that they “never forecast up to 25 named storms” generally.

However, this upcoming hurricane season will most likely not be as active as 2005 with 28 named storms. Still, the worst storms are most likely yet to come with a “hyperactive” amount of storms around the corner. About 95% of the storms during hurricane season happen between mid-August and the end of October, so there could be quite few tropical storms and hurricanes on the horizon.
