Ever since Hamilton premiered on Disney+ this past month, we can’t stop humming along to the soundtrack.

Disney is known for its own musicals based off the beautiful stories and films that have been crafted throughout the years. However, shows like Hamilton reach a wider audience of viewers in a way that Disney hasn’t had the chance to do before.
After the height of Hamilton‘s popularity on the streaming service, Disney+ has decided to make a movie adaptation of the Broadway hit Once On This Island, according to Playbill.

Jocelyn Bioh will be writing the script for the Ahrens and Flahery musical with Wanuri Kahiu and Marc Platt working as the director and producer. The musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty is originally based on Rosa Guy’s novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl.

The story follows Ti Moune, a kind and generous peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy on the opposite side of the island. As the gods feel conflicted over her fate, Ti Moune must learn what love and loss are both like as she rewrites her own story. The original Broadway production premiered in 1990 with a Tony Award winning revival in 2017.

I am surprised you did not mention that Rosa Guy’s original novel was a reinterpretation of Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.”
