This summer movie season is looking a little less active than usual, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate cinematic history!

Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times is holding the #UltimateSummerMovieShowdown, and readers have chosen The Avengers (2012) as winners of week one!

“You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel.” That was Loki’s villainous monologue in The Avengers, but both Chang and Whipp have noted just how prophetic it was. Marvel has dominated the Summer Blockbuster scene for years, and it’s no surprise to find it shooting to the top. In fact, the closest competition was another Marvel movie: Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002). This was probably to be expected. Marvel loves releasing movies in May, and Cheng elected to sort each category by the week of release. That sort of clockwork release schedule meant that the MCU was bound to rise to the top.

Still, Cheng and Whipp have some strong opinions. With the Infinity Saga finally over, we’ve got over a decade of Marvel movies to reflect on. There have been highs and lows, but it’s undeniable that The Avengers defined summer blockbusters for a generation. Want to know what these two critics have to say? You can read the article in full at the LA Times.

Do you agree with their opinions? Think another film should have won? Let us know in the comments!
