It is a very happy Star Wars day indeed (get it? May the 4th?). We have been wondering what the future holds for Star Wars films with the end of the Skywalker saga last year.

We’ve had plenty of shows and news to hold us over like The Mandalorian, the upcoming Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi shows, and a mysterious “female-centric” show for Disney+. Now, though, it seems we’ll be getting a new Star Wars feature film!

The Star Wars website made a big announcement today — fitting since it is May 4th. Academy Award winner Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release!

Waititi is known for his work on Joja Rabbit and as director of the first season finale of The Mandalorian, so he’s got some Star Wars under his belt already. He’s joined on the project by Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns known for her work on 1917.

No further info is available about this film for the time being but we are so excited that we’ll get to see some lightsaber-y action on the big screen again.
