Southwest Airlines Predicts Travel Won’t Return to Normal Until Places Like Disney Re-Open

With the Disney parks closed around the world and many cities having stay-at-home orders in place, not many people have been traveling.

In a recent interview, the CEO of Southwest Airlines, Gary Kelly, talked about how the closures across the country have much less people traveling. Only 6% of the seats on flights in April were filled, and they don’t expect that number to be higher than 10% on flights in May.

Kelley said, “the traffic levels are next to zero at this point” and that guests need to have a reason to fly. He explained, “They need to have something to be able to do when they get there. So Disney World needs to open back up. Restaurants need to open back up.”

Kelley said that Southwest and the airports will work with the federal government to put appropriate screening procedures in place and that Southwest supports the idea of doing health screenings before passengers board their flights.

Kelley went on to say that they will encourage passengers to wear masks for safety. Southwest also plans to encourage passengers to leave space between each other on the flights, which Kelly said is “certainly not an issue right now but in the coming months we’ll want customers to be comfortable that there’ll be spacing.”

  1. Currently anyone traveling from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or New Orleans to any Florida destination will be required to self-quarantine upon arrival for up to 14 days. So until that changes don’t expect to see crowds return to the parks or cruises.
