The Dawn of a New Saga: A New Era of ‘Star Wars’ is Coming This August!

The Skywalker Saga has ended, and with it ends a chapter of Star Wars history that’s been with us since the series’ inception. We’ve watched three generations of heroes struggle to free the Galaxy from the shadow of the Galactic Empire. The saga is well and truly over.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker marked the end of an era.

So, the question is… what comes next? To build the future of Star Wars, Lucasfilm has turned to the past, finding new stories in an era as yet unexplored. An era when the Jedi were truly the guardians of peace and justice, and a shadow from the outer rim threatened to destroy all the Republic held dear. Welcome to The High Republic!

The High Republic is the third major era of Star Wars storytelling we’ve seen, at least in terms of the current Disney canon. There’s the Skywalker Era, which covers nearly all the Star Wars media we’re familiar with, and The Old Republic, which covers the popular Bioware series of games. The High Republic era takes place between the two, starting 200 years before The Phantom Menace. This is the height of the Jedi Order and the Republic, without the shadow of the Sith and the Clone Wars hanging overhead, they’re able to serve as the guardians of peace and justice they were always meant to be.

However, a new threat faces the galaxy in the form of The Nihil, a horde of raiders from beyond the Republic’s borders. When a “Great Disaster” strikes the Republic, the Jedi must rally together to face this threat from the untamed outer rim. Of course, the story isn’t just about them; there will be plenty of new smugglers, bounty hunters, and other heroes that emerge in this new era, so all Star Wars fans will find someone to rally behind!

The High Republic series will remain exclusive to books and comics for now, with no plans for any film or television adaptations. The first wave of stories will include Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule, a new novel aimed at adult audiences.

Young Adult readers can explore the story with Into the Dark by Claudia Gray.
