There’s no denying that Luke Skywalker is one of the most famous figures in Star Wars lore; he was the original protagonist, after all. So it should come as no surprise to learn that his legend is surrounded with some… occasional tall tales.

Ken Liu explored some of the more colorful legends surrounding Luke in his 2017 novel, The Legends of Luke Skywalker. Now, VIZ Media is bringing that story to life with a new manga anthology!
This isn’t the first time that Star Wars has been adapted to the manga (Japanese comic book) format. In 1998, Dark Horse Comics adapted the original trilogy into manga form for an international audience, concluding their run with an adaptation of The Phantom Menace. Tokyopop also released an anthology of non-canon stories in 2006, while major publishing house Take Shobo adapted the Clone Wars TV series. It’s a fitting relationship: Star Wars is heavily inspired by samurai films and the works of famed director Akira Kurosawa, so seeing the films return to such a distinctly Japanese art form is like watching that inspiration come full circle.

The new manga features four stories, forgoing the framing device of Liu’s novel. Each tale depicts a different aspect of Skywalker’s story, though the question of whether they’re canon is deliberately left up to debate.
Akira Fukaya and Takashi Kisaki are the duo behind “The Starship Graveyard”, making their English language debut! After Luke single-handedly destroys a Star Destroyer, he forms an unlikely friendship with a young Imperial loyalist he saves from the wreckage.
Haruichi makes her own English debut with “I, Droid” a story that deals with the capture and enslavement of droids, including R2-D2. How does Luke tie in to that, you ask? You’ll have to read and find out.
The artist Subaru provides a touch of levity with “The Tale of Lugubrious Mote”, the first-hand account of a sentient louse that witnessed the assault on Jabba’s palace and formed a bond with Leia. Mote isn’t exactly quick to warm up to Luke, providing a unique perspective on the famous scene from the eyes of one of the smallest creatures in the galaxy. This is also Subaru’s English language debut.

Finally, Akira Himekawa, the famous team of female artists and writers behind The Legend of Zelda manga, tell the tale of a young xenobiologist hitching a ride home in Luke’s modified A-Wing, only to get a lot more than she bargained for.
The anthology was released on January 14th and can be found wherever manga is sold.
