A Modern Take on a Classic Drama: “Party of Five” Premiers Tonight on Freeform!

Party of Five, the classic 90s drama about a group of siblings forced to fend for themselves after the loss of their parents, has returned with a modern twist. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never stopped wanting to be closer to free.

But don’t expect the continued adventures of the denim wearing Salinger family in this series. The new Party of Five kicks off with a much more modern problem: the struggle of being an immigrant family in the United States.

The new series follows the Acosta family,  Emilio (Brandon Larracuente), Beto (Niko Guardado), Lucia (Emily Tosta),  Valentina (Elle Paris Legaspi), and their baby brother Rafael.

After their parents Javier (Bruno Bichir) and Gloria (Fernanda Urrejola) are deported to Mexico, the Acosta siblings must learn to fend for themselves in a system stacked against them.

This is a dramatic and topical new take on the classic formula; unlike the Salinger family’s tragic car accident, the deportation of the Acosta parents represents a grim reality that millions of American families face every day. Will Javier and Gloria ever get back into the country? How will the siblings survive with no support in a system that’s been engineered against them?

While series creators Christopher Keyser and Amy Lippman remain on the series, Colombian director Rodrigo Garcia has signed on as executive producer to provide a fresh take on this classic formula.

The series premiers tonight on Freeform. You can stream the pilot for free on Freeform’s official website. Afterward you can catch episode 2, “Margin of Error”. The series will air every Wednesday for the entirety of its 10-episode season.
