Hello, my name is Molly, and I am a certified Disney Fanatic! I came home to a Minnie Mouse nursery, I begged my parents to take me to Disney World every chance I got, and I somehow managed to make my Disney obsession my career by running around Disney World and talking to my phone like a crazy person.
Normally I am very gung ho about (almost) all things Disney. I am the first in line to see a new Pixar film, I cry every time I see fireworks, and I STILL go see characters as a grown human.

I say all this to establish my credibility as a Disney Fanatic. I say all this so you’ll take my next statement VERY seriously:
I HATE the new Mickey Mouse cartoons.
To be clear, I mean the style of drawing — not the cartoons or plots themselves.
Don’t know what I’m talking about? Let me refresh your memory (or shine a light on this new “Mickey Mouse.”)
Why are his eyes like that — long oval eyes with small, slanted pupils? Why is he so skinny, but his pants are so big? How are they staying up?! WHO IS THIS? That is certainly not my Mickey Mouse.
They didn’t just do this to Mickey — check out Donald.
I agree Donald — NOPE. It’s honestly hard to put into words why I don’t like them so I reached out to a few other AllEars Team members who I know share my sentiments. Words like “disproportionate” “bad style choices” and “Ren and Stimpy” came up.
Unfortunately, our dear friend Goofy got the brunt of it.
His arms and legs are SO skinny! With weird hairs poking off them? His eyes are bugged out and off-color. Has he slept in the last decade? And where are his pants?! He’s not Donald!
Goofy is a successful single dad who put his son through college. He should have more self-respect than this!
There, that’s better. Do you see what I mean now that you see this version of the trio?
I know animation styles changes over time; Mickey and the gang have had quite a few variations over the last 90 years. But there is something about this latest version that feels cheap? Too angular? Less cuddly?
Whatever the reason, we aren’t fans. At the end of the day, we will always love Mickey, Goofy, and Donald. We just love them a little more when they look like themselves.
Author’s note: I have since ridden Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. And I think it’s an adorable attraction! It’s amazing what they accomplished on a no height requirement ride. It helps me appreciate Mickey and Minnie more but…I still prefer them the old way. And Goofy still got hit the hardest. BUT — go ride the ride!! It’s precious.

I completely agree. I hate this new style. Whenever there is merch with this style, I’m not even tempted to buy it. All the characters look so ugly drawn this way. It’s such a down grade.
Yes! It is so disconcerting. The new Mickey and friends style is creepy. I was very disappointed to ride the ride and see this style there too. Sad. Such a waste of money. How did this style get approved? A very busy Disneyland had short lines for this ride. Probably because this style is so creepy, absent of the beauty and joy of Disney. I think it was a terrible mistake on their part to invest so much in this uncomfortable style. I hope they change it.
100% agree. This new style of Mickey Mouse isn’t pleasant at all. As others mentioned it lacks the warmth of Disney characters in favor of crude and rude animation, deranged behavior, Red & Stimpy-esque grossout ‘humor’ designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. In many ways I don’t watch it for the same reason I no longer watch Spongebob despite being a huge fan of the original seasons. It’s like someone made it as a cynical parody of Mickey Mouse, only it’s official.
I think the art design itself would be OK if they made it ‘cleaner’ and lose the freaked out expressions. Maybe it’d work better as a comic book instead of a cartoon.
1930’s era mickey mouse has the same eyes and goofy had no pants!
It’s basically the original cartoons with modernized comedy styles, and we think it’s hilarious! Will gladly take it over bubbly characters with syrupy voices and bubble gum storylines
Can’t stand them. I couldn’t even believe they’d make them look so… cheap. Not wholesome. Nothing like anything the Disney brand has built and pushed for years. I can’t even watch them and my son won’t either. It’s official. They’ve ruined Mickey Mouse.
I completely agree! It almost creepy and disgusting. I always associated Disney with wholesome. This style of animation, especially Goofy, is not. Quite simply, I think the direction the new CEO is bringing to Disney is ruining a lot of childhood favorites. Very disappointed.
I just saw this new version when I got Disney+ for my niece. I hate it. It really is like they stepped through a mirror into the Ren and Stimpy world. Goofy has always been my favorite and they’ve ruined him. He looks gross. In fact, gross is the word that comes to mind with much of the animation. Everything looks dirty. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who is disappointed with this new style.
Nope. That’s the word I was looking for, cheap. Everything about Classic Disney is going away and poor Walt would not approve. Of course everything is digitized these days, Disney really doesn’t care what we think as long as it saves them a few bucks.
Omg!! I so agree !! 150% I never though I’d hear myself say it but these are the ugliest characters ever ! I won’t buy merchandise with this version characters and if it wasn’t bad enough they took the Great Movie Ride they replaced it with theses awful versions of my beloved friends!
Yeah tbh the animation looks rather gross. For example on the Runway Railway ride at Hollywood studios there is a part where Micky has an allergic reaction. The images are not as funny as they are nasty. I actually love South Park, but for a kids cartoon the look is rather grotesque. And agree, Goofy doesn’t look as goofy as he does disheveled. I feel like they could have done without the unsightly characterizations and did what The Amazing World of Gumball did. It’s okay that Disney changed, but I think they went a little distorted this time.
I absolutely can’t stand the new style of the cartoons. I was talking with my kids about it as we see these styles appearing more and more in today’s animation. It feels unfortunate that a beloved character style felt that to keep up with today’s times they had to add a “Spumko” feel to it. Ren and Stimpy (Spumko) started with this style it was the original style for the cartoon and it found its audience…. Its really sad that someone has enough pull to take cartoons that have been around decades before and had an establish fan base make a change that completely deforms what we love about the characters and makes it into something unnecessary. I fear that we are only about 20 years away from someone saying “you know what Disney is missing? That certain… South Park quality… can we make it more like South Park?” and for the sake of trying to make money they’ll make the first adult only Disney character show. I am pretty certain Walt would be rather disgusted by the way the most magical place on earth has become a place where you can come see versions of your favorite cartoons that you don’t want to see, but only if you can afford it.
Late to this post, but the new cartoons are DISGUSTING. They’re like old Nickelodeon caroons (Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, etc.) They feature gross antics and I find them SO offensive. There’s a reason why I always liked Disney — They didn’t do crude humor!!
I love it! It’s so cute! I also don’t mind the illogical stylized art because.. well it’s a cartoon and the old shorts as well as most cartoons are based off of over stylized art or illogical plots so an illogical art style just makes sense to me also? As for the slits in the eyes and goofy without pants I think it’s supposed to be and inspiration based off of old goofy which was the 1932 version (who had both the slits in the eyes and no pants btw). It’s honestly not that bad in opinion and to be frank I feel like adults or older people are the ones complaining the most out of the mickey mouse shorts art style, at least that’s my experience? I think if anything a lot of people appreciate the more modernized style of an old take. It’s a new classic kind of like how fashion cycles so are the trends and arts? I think it’s a respectful ode to the older original cartoons and I love the new style a lot more than the mickey mouse clubhouse dump. Like if I were to complain about one out of all of them, I feel like that one was the worst. This one doesn’t make that hate cut. Although I agree with Goofy for sure idk why they gave him yellow eyes lol.
I didn’t want to give them a chance but then started watching them with my daughter and I like them! And Potato Land is probably the funniest thing I’ve seen in years
I don’t like this version AT ALL. To top it off it was playing on the magical express and my son (3) was so confused and I felt it was inappropriate for him.
I came here to write this same comment!! Before Magical Express was finished, we had to sit through a show of this new cartoon and my 3 year old was hysterically crying because she was scared of the weird characters. Doesn’t that say something Disney??
I agree, I don’t usually comment online on things. I love Disney, but I really
can’t get on board with new cartoons/artists… its the same for Mickey, Chipmunks and Ducktales… all look like they were made in 1950s… kids today like up to date and it feels like we have taken a step into the past. I get kids are watchin all the original shows coz of streamin services. That does not mean they want us to step into the past.
I have a theory on this.
The Disney Company has been pushing for copyright law changes for years. And that makes sense as they don’t want Mickey (A company icon) falling into the public domain where anyone could use it.
The image of Mickey Mouse has evolved over the decades, and become more sophisticated and updated as the years pass by.
This “New” version of Mickey is very similar to the original 1928 version, and it could be claimed that as this new version is current and being used by the company it qualifies as a new image and subject to current copyright.
This way the company has stopped the old images of Mickey being used by anyone for any reason.
Well, it’s my theory anyway.
Its the same weird feeling I have… thats why googled about it… its so horrible that I dont let my son watch it… the new one. I checked if it is the original one… yes it was original… i was disappointed the way they look n behave… so cheap n filthy… yakkkkk types…
I’m know we’re in the minority here but my family loves the new shorts. The animation took some adjustment but the writing is top notch and our whole family absolutely love them.
I agree, can’t stand them! While the new ride has amazing technology, I miss the Great Movie Ride and wish they would have just updated it. Disney is making lots of changes I don’t agree with and feel like will not be in its long term best interest.
I so totally agree! The magic is gone when I see these new animated characters. They feel just wrong to me. Please bring back the ones we’ve all loved for such a long time. Cute and cuddly.

Omg I barf when my toddler begs for these .. bad movement, texture. , and occasionally completely wrong colors. And the very .. incorrect and generic backgrounds on their international travel episodes? Oof yuck
Enough is enough. These characters are not Disney. The adults as well as our children do not like these at all. What is wrong with Goofy?!! My little guy thinks he is sick. This is not Disney magic nor does it make you feel the warmth of Disney. Please listen and return our beloved characters! You are doing away with the magic that brings people to the Parks both young and old.
I first saw them on YouTube (before Disney+ came out). I thought, “This has to be a parody. Some college kids who are taking an animation class must have done this.” Unfortunately, I was wrong. My son hates these new cartoons. He says they’re ugly. He only watches the classics and Mickey’s Clubhouse.
I hate this new animation trend across the board! I too immediately thought “Ren & Stimpy” ! The look isn’t wholesome or classic, and honestly frightens me a little.

I 10000000% agree. I don’t know what it is. But I just love the classic Disney animation style. I feel I can run up and hug them. But this “new” style is just a giant NO. Like they look shady. Or somethings off. Hard to explain. When I saw it. The first words out of my mouth were. Why are they messing with the classics. Just stop. So yes! I agree.
I share your sentiments whole-heartedly, Molly!! My first thought when I saw the new “Mickey” was, “Ew! What is this Cartoon Network trash? Be better than Cartoon Network, Disney. Be BETTER.” I get that they drew inspiration from the original animation on the 30’s (ALLEGEDLY), but still. Some things need to reconsidered considerably.
Also, we’re going to Disney soon, and I am STRUGGLING with the idea of going on the Runaway Railway. It’s taken away my BELOVED Great Movie Ride, and I know I’m going to bringing in some very “dark night of the soul” energy to this experience. My MGM is almost no more. (Don’t you DARE jump ship, Indiana Jones… don’t you dare.)
Ren and Stumpy! That was my exact description I gave to my husband. We are also Disney fanatics and I hate this animation style… And yes, especially goofy. Quite frankly, he’s scary.
I like the nod to 1928 Mickey but I agree about the cartoon. As soon as we watched it, we thought: Ren & Stimpy. The plots are a bit “adult” & some episodes actually scared my 8YO. POOR GOOFY!! What has he done to deserve this???
I’m admittedly old enough to remember the original Mickey Mouse Club on tv! Believe me, the new style animation is not good. The characters look disreputable and sleazy instead of cuddly and cute.

The new style and cartoons are horrendous. They are creepy and kinda evil looking. I literally just got home from a trip to Disney where I rode Mickey And Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The ride was very cool with the way the cars moved and all that but the animation drawing style and the plots of the new Mickey are a far cry from the lovable and friendly characters my kid loves. The new ones are like something from Adult Swim on Cartoon Network and I won’t let my son watch them

Ever since I first saw them I HATED THE NEW MICKEY MOUSE CARTOONS. I wish they brought the old Mickey and friends back. I remember House of Mouse was my favorite show.
I completely agree with you. I hate the new style too. However, I have ridden Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railroad and while this is the same animation style in the ride, it did not detract from the ride itself. It is VERY fun (think how the transports move in Rise of the Resistance). So, as much as I hate the new animation styles, the ride is still worth it.
I couldn’t agree more. Thought I was the only Disney lover who HATES these awful cartoons, so glad to know I am not alone. I have tried so hard to like it and I just can’t. It’s just not the cute lovable characters I grew up loving, and I’m sad this is what my son is stuck with.
I’m so glad I’m nit alone in my STRONG dislike of the new animation style. Like others, I immediately thought of Ren & Stimpy, which I loathed. Let’s hope the next version comes along sooner rather than later.
The first time I saw them I was like wait, the dude who drew for Ren & Stimpy get a job at Disney? So not a fan. It looks like low budget 90’s cartoon.

They are disturbing looking to me. They all look like they did WAY too many drugs in the 90s and Goofy looks like a homeless guy who always has a bottle in a brown paper sack outside of a gas station.

The new Mickey shorts are pretty similar to the characterization of the earlier cartoons. So many people just have this impression of Mickey the way he’s portrayed as plastic corporate icon since the 60’s that it stifles creativity.

The first Mickey cartoon produced, Plane Crazy, suggests his mischievous side, as we see a young, scrappy Mickey looking for trouble and adventure. Why go back to an old character? They worsened the old Mickey and created the new one. In my opinion they should have left Mickey and friends alone. They looked adorable before. Now they look crazy.
I 100% agree with you Molly!!! The new animation doesn’t do the characters any favors! Goofy got the worst of it, followed by Mickey & Pete. Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Pluto didn’t get it as bad, but I prefer their classic looks.
I feel like this is a Cartoon Network version of a Disney show. Not a fan at all. I feel like they are always acting crazy and they look so trashy. I will stick to letting my kids watch Mickey Mouse Club House and Mickey and the Roadster Racers because that’s the Mickey we fell in love with and all know.
I HATE the way they drew Goofy. Ren and Stimpy is exactly what I thought. I hate that art style. I am okay with Mickey and Donald until they go into crazy R&S mode. I was such a Disney snob growing up thinking all animations styles were inferior to Disney. Don’t get me started on anime. This new style doesn’t help my cause. ?
I dislike the new version too. As a grandparent, I would not buy my grandchild a Disney stuffed animal that looked like that. I much prefer the cute and cuddly version.
Also, he did have pacman eyes(or pie-eye) even back then. Some of the 20s and 30s cartoon shorts have them. That said I do agree the pupils are extremely elongated in the new design.
I don’t like them either, but I was never a big fan of the previous “perfect” style from the 90s(and I guess most post-40s variations but 90s and 2000s is when it got too solid and in general it just kept getting uglier compared to say the first incarnation of his modern design in Fantasia) either. I wasn’t a big fan of them adding sclera(white part of the eyes) to his design.
My favorite design would have to be the 1930s one where his eyes were 2 black dots and his skin was pure pale white(unlike his post-Fantasia design where his skin is colored like a human’s).
I like the new Mickey design. From what I understand they are loosely based of the original Mickey from 1930 (I had to look it up). It is true that the new cartoon can be a little scary for younger viewers but it is still entertaining to watch. To keep a design unchanged for decades I believe to be unrealistic. I cant think of any brand that kept the “brand design” the same from the original.
I hate it too! Goofy looks like a cracked out hobo and every other character just grosses me out! I don’t know, it’s just very unsettling for me. Even the story lines of some of these episodes I am not a fan of. Why so violent and vulgar? Not the Mickey Mouse cartoons I grew up with that’s for sure. Not sure if I want my 4 year old watching this tbh.
I too am a huge Mickey fan. Mickey everything. People know my house just from all the Mickey decor I have just outdoors alone.

I just found this page because I was googling, trying to figure out why they did this to the cartoons. They’re all so odd now, and frankly, Goofy disgusts me.
They gave Mickey TEETH in the first cartoon from 1928 “Steamboat Willie”. Watch it and see for yourself. These characters are drawn more true to the original early characters, and not the characters from more modern times. If you look at the earliest appearance of Goofy from 1932 you will see he was drawn just as “disgusting” as the new Goofy. I really like the new series and hope it goes on forever.
Really can’t stand the new style characters! Disney World opened the year I was born and I have had a love affair since then. The new design is something out of Twilight Zone. What were the designers thinking?!?! The drawing just seems lazy and makes our favs look psycho. I refuse to watch the new stuff, because…frankly they give me nightmares.
I’m with you!! I can’t stand this new animation of Mickey and the gang. For me it just ruins the cartoon. Poor Goofy reminds me of a drunken and unkempt person I knew as a teenager. I keep waiting for Mickey’s shorts to fall off too
I think the new design is great and a variation from the old original steamboat willy Mickey, and less 80’s corporate version of the charters by far. You can tell that this is made for a new generation of fans and made like cartoons have been in the late 90’s to now. I think it’s a fun take and the kids today can relate to the design a lot better.
Sure it may look great but it doesn’t fit “Mickey Mouse” the old show almost everybody love. I rather they make their own unique show and not make the “their” Mickey Mouse. What I’m trying to say is that they should just let the characters go and make their own. The creator left this world and in my opinion I think his character should too and should live in the fans heart. And not to be remaked.
First I want to say I love you (as a Disney fanatic). You are the epitome of a Disney fan. I love your stamina, story telling, energy, sense of humor,tips, etc. You seem to be the person any fan would love to go to the park with. keep it going! Love your videos.
To answer your question, I have disliked the new characters since the first time I saw them.
I hate the new look too. It looks lazy and sloppy. The mouth winds me up too. Are the animators just too lazy now? Disney stopped doing hand drawn films which I prefer to CGI.
I do not like the “new” Mickey either. They look unkept, like bums, like they are hobos. Then our kids are to watch these and yet dress appropriately. I don’t see anything good coming from this, shall I say “grunge style”!
I agree with you. I hate the new designs for Mickey and the others. It looks too Nickelodeon for me. And the characters look like they would stink and should have flies buzzing around them.
I agree the “new” gang is not what we are used to BUT, with the writing and scripting of the stories, the characters fit perfectly with it. These new cartoons aren’t exactly the typical antics Mickey and pals have portrayed in the past, so the rough styling with the new Mickey team seem to fit the edgy story lines which at times are borderline inappropriate for the little ones.
I don’t like the tone or content of the new cartoons. I feel like I’m watching a Ren and Stimpy knockoff (and I liked R&S). Also, Mickey is obnoxious. To me the characters have lost what made them famous. I refuse to watch them and really don’t let my kids watch them either.
I am right there with you!!! Absolutely do not like the new animation style. Also don’t like the new shorts!! they are so spastic and violent. There was a marathon on one of our cable channels, and I couldn’t even stand to sit through 5 minutes. Bring bag the CLASSIC Fab 5!!!
I’m definitely not a fan of this style either. Even my 11 yr old asked me what was wrong with them because they don’t look anything like the previous styles. I have to just say ick!
Couldn’t agree more. I would’ve really enjoyed a reboot of the old cartoons with a throwback animation style if it felt more old-school Disney. I enjoy a few jokes that might be over the kids’ heads, that’s always been fun in cartoons. But it doesn’t have to be all gritty and dark. That seems soooooo off-brand for Disney.
Totally agree! There is no warmth to them and the Ren and Stimpy comparison is the first thing I thought of. Are they going to try to make the characters walking around WDW look more like them now? I am so turned off to them!
Let’s agree to disagree, I love this new style of animation which fits the tone and humor very well. I haven’t watched a disney cartoon in decades and now I’m watching it with my daughter who is 10. She loves it too! We talk about and reenact scenes and movements the characters make in the cartoon. It was a pleasant surprise for me but I get why it’s not for everyone. All cartoons are exaggerated, these are just exaggerated a bit more which I’m a fan of.

I hate them too. They are very close to being scary looking. My grandson runs when Goofy is on & says No! Please go back to the sweet looking characters we all love! Where is that petition?
I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds these designs off-putting. It’s like a cheap, Flash-animated Cartoon Network short, and I especially dislike the short, jerky motions that they (and most modern animation really) have. I saw the ridethrough of Runaway Railway, and while it does look like a cute, family-friendly ride, I don’t really like that 2 1/2D approach. It reminds me more of the more generic dark rides you see at other amusement parks. I’d hate to see Disney start relying more heavily on things like this, than on the full-sized animatronics they popularized.
I can’t agree, Molly. I LOVE every bit of it. They look like Mickey and the gang should have always looked, IMO. In fact, they have actually made me enjoy Mickey for the first time in my 55 years. I would buy EVERYTHING merch related to this Mickey, Minnie, Donald , or Goofy. Love them.

I’m with you! People will like the new ride because, well … it’s NEW. And it’s at WDW. But I HATE the characters’ new look. Hate it. I really want to protest by not riding but I know that would never have an impact (and then, depression set in!)
Unlike everyone else here (who either love the Mickey shorts or hate them), I’m neither of those. I have a very mixed opinion. Some of the shorts can be pretty funny, and I love all the Disney references and callbacks. You can tell they have fun producing these shorts and coming up with such off-the-wall ideas. On the other hand, it doesn’t really feel like Mickey Mouse. The “Ren and Stimpy” comparison is pretty accurate with its ugly art style, and a lot of the characters look stoned out of their mind. The shorts can get very weird, especially “Ghoul Friend” and “Stayin’ Cool” which are way too creepy and deranged. I wonder what Walt Disney would think of these shorts if he saw them.
Right! The Ren & Stimpy style is just part of it. Mickey has some major anger issues in these shorts. You were spot on with Goofy, he looks like a homeless drug addict.
I completely agree. The new look is pathetic. As a Mickey fan for over 60 years I’m ready to sign a petition to bring back the characters that we’ve grown to know and love. Sign me up!
I’m going to go against the echo chamber in the comment section and say, no I don’t agree. The style of the characters reflect the comedic tone of the cartoons perfectly. It’s a tribute to the rubber hose style, makes great use of the principals of animation such as squash and stretch, and is great form of 2D animation. People claiming “Ren and Stimpy” and nothing else makes me wonder if they bothered to watch the shorts (or even ren and stimpy) considering the later cartoon is geared to gross out humor. I can understand why this may be not someone’s cup of tea, but its certainly a disservice to dismiss the effort and creativity behind these shorts.
When I first saw these, I thought they were some sort of joke. The comparison to Ren and Stimpy is so perfect! I liked Ren and Stimpy for what it was, but it has NO place in Disney animation! I’m a long time fan of Mickey’s pie-eyed look, but even that can’t save these Fab 5 abominations! I absolutely hate all the ways that Disney is taking the magic and the individual character out of so many facets of what makes Disney, Disney. From removing so much personality from WDW Resort rooms (all the white is so darn boring, I miss the comforters and stuff that were specific to each resort) to putting out cartoons that have far worse quality than the Saturday morning cartoons I grew up with, it all would have broken Walt’s heart. And don’t get me started on welcoming the Simpsons to the Disney family. Like Ren and Stimpy, I liked the Simpson’s for what they were/are, but I pray that the day I see Bart and Homer walking around Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios never comes. I mean, I like bloody horror movies too, but I don’t want to see them in the most magical place on earth!
I CAN’T DO IT!!! IT’S LIKE REN AND STIMPY CARTOONS!!! Now they are using these versions to make a ride in Toontown!!! WTF!!!! I love Mickey and the Roadster Racers…even as an adult! That’s the Fab 5 and friends that I LOVE!
I thought I was alone…I am a huge Mickey fan and just hate the way he looks now…I know he has changed through the years but I absolutely hate the way his shorts look..as if they are 4 sizes too big…I am not a fan of the new style and wonder if the classic look is better with Mickey and Coca Cola!
I completely agree! I can barely stand to watch this style of animation – it looks cheap and unfinished. It’s bad enough that they removed The Great Movie Ride with its authenticity, film history and actual connection to Walt Disney, but to replace it with this! Appalling.
OMG !! I SO AGREE !!! Why does Mickey look like that ! I will ride once to see what replaced the Awesome Great Movie Ride – but I will not purchase anything that has that imitation Mickey on it !!!!

Walt made his creations with such care and precision. to run so seamlessly that it looked real. What would the rain in Bambi look like in this style. This style is BAD, CHEAP and totally against what Walt would do.
Totally agree!!! They have an anime look about them. They don’t appear as warm and friendly as their original counterparts. Just too harsh for my taste!

I agree that these Mickey figures and the cartoons they star in are alarming. Jolting. They are campy and outrageous. Just the way they were intended to be! Have you watched the cartoons? They are crazy! Some are hilarious! Have you seen the one where Minnie watches Pluto while Mickey goes out of town? She overfeeds Pluto and he becomes ginormous! These cartoons, I believe, are seen all over the world. Disney went for a universal funny crazy theme, easily understood by everyone. These are not the usual situations the Gang of Five gets themselves into! So the artists made them different looking maybe? Just my opinion, I could be wrong! Watch a few episodes, they might grow on you!
Sadly, they’re trying to make them hip and cool or something, and it falls a little flat. Not sure why they couldn’t have just given Mickey a little tweak to update him, not withhold meals from him.

I HATE HATE HATE the new look!!! My child works at WDW and says the same thing!! These dont seem like the loveable characters and the ones Walt would have approved of. WHY and who made the decision to do this to such beloved characters!!!
Walt would have put a stop to these figures because he knew how we and he loved
the original characters. I hope when the attraction begins people will make a fuss and it will be changed.
I too dislike the anorexic-looking figures. (No offense intended). There is something just sooo wrong with these caricatures. They dont have the Mickey/Minnie/Goofy/Donald/Daisy styles and bodies we all love. Could you really cuddle up to stick figure?
I’m so glad I’m not alone in this. As much as I loved Ren and Stimpy, I don’t feel like that style fits with Mickey and the gang. I also hate the way they have chosen to draw these characters and was surprised I didn’t hear much negative feedback about it. That being said, I am looking forward to Runaway Railway!
Hmmmm… A different opinion here. My family absolutely LOVES the new mickey cartoons — We saw them for the first time while on property one year. We think they are so clever, hilarious and enjoy the artwork and aesthetic — I do see/recognize what the author/article are pointing out.
Particularly love the episode where Mickey loses his ears and the episode is ‘silent’ while his ears are missing!
I completely agree. I hate this new style. Whenever there is merch with this style, I’m not even tempted to buy it. All the characters look so ugly drawn this way. It’s such a down grade.
Yes! It is so disconcerting. The new Mickey and friends style is creepy. I was very disappointed to ride the ride and see this style there too. Sad. Such a waste of money. How did this style get approved? A very busy Disneyland had short lines for this ride. Probably because this style is so creepy, absent of the beauty and joy of Disney. I think it was a terrible mistake on their part to invest so much in this uncomfortable style. I hope they change it.

100% agree. This new style of Mickey Mouse isn’t pleasant at all. As others mentioned it lacks the warmth of Disney characters in favor of crude and rude animation, deranged behavior, Red & Stimpy-esque grossout ‘humor’ designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. In many ways I don’t watch it for the same reason I no longer watch Spongebob despite being a huge fan of the original seasons. It’s like someone made it as a cynical parody of Mickey Mouse, only it’s official.
I think the art design itself would be OK if they made it ‘cleaner’ and lose the freaked out expressions. Maybe it’d work better as a comic book instead of a cartoon.

It’s basically the original cartoons with modernized comedy styles, and we think it’s hilarious! Will gladly take it over bubbly characters with syrupy voices and bubble gum storylines

I completely agree! It almost creepy and disgusting. I always associated Disney with wholesome. This style of animation, especially Goofy, is not. Quite simply, I think the direction the new CEO is bringing to Disney is ruining a lot of childhood favorites. Very disappointed.
I just saw this new version when I got Disney+ for my niece. I hate it. It really is like they stepped through a mirror into the Ren and Stimpy world. Goofy has always been my favorite and they’ve ruined him. He looks gross. In fact, gross is the word that comes to mind with much of the animation. Everything looks dirty. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who is disappointed with this new style.

Yeah tbh the animation looks rather gross. For example on the Runway Railway ride at Hollywood studios there is a part where Micky has an allergic reaction. The images are not as funny as they are nasty. I actually love South Park, but for a kids cartoon the look is rather grotesque. And agree, Goofy doesn’t look as goofy as he does disheveled. I feel like they could have done without the unsightly characterizations and did what The Amazing World of Gumball did. It’s okay that Disney changed, but I think they went a little distorted this time.

I absolutely can’t stand the new style of the cartoons. I was talking with my kids about it as we see these styles appearing more and more in today’s animation. It feels unfortunate that a beloved character style felt that to keep up with today’s times they had to add a “Spumko” feel to it. Ren and Stimpy (Spumko) started with this style it was the original style for the cartoon and it found its audience…. Its really sad that someone has enough pull to take cartoons that have been around decades before and had an establish fan base make a change that completely deforms what we love about the characters and makes it into something unnecessary. I fear that we are only about 20 years away from someone saying “you know what Disney is missing? That certain… South Park quality… can we make it more like South Park?” and for the sake of trying to make money they’ll make the first adult only Disney character show. I am pretty certain Walt would be rather disgusted by the way the most magical place on earth has become a place where you can come see versions of your favorite cartoons that you don’t want to see, but only if you can afford it.
Late to this post, but the new cartoons are DISGUSTING. They’re like old Nickelodeon caroons (Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, etc.) They feature gross antics and I find them SO offensive. There’s a reason why I always liked Disney — They didn’t do crude humor!!
I love it! It’s so cute! I also don’t mind the illogical stylized art because.. well it’s a cartoon and the old shorts as well as most cartoons are based off of over stylized art or illogical plots so an illogical art style just makes sense to me also? As for the slits in the eyes and goofy without pants I think it’s supposed to be and inspiration based off of old goofy which was the 1932 version (who had both the slits in the eyes and no pants btw). It’s honestly not that bad in opinion and to be frank I feel like adults or older people are the ones complaining the most out of the mickey mouse shorts art style, at least that’s my experience? I think if anything a lot of people appreciate the more modernized style of an old take. It’s a new classic kind of like how fashion cycles so are the trends and arts? I think it’s a respectful ode to the older original cartoons and I love the new style a lot more than the mickey mouse clubhouse dump. Like if I were to complain about one out of all of them, I feel like that one was the worst. This one doesn’t make that hate cut. Although I agree with Goofy for sure idk why they gave him yellow eyes lol.
I didn’t want to give them a chance but then started watching them with my daughter and I like them! And Potato Land is probably the funniest thing I’ve seen in years
I actually like the updated Mickey, Minnie and Donald. Goofy, however, looks like his jaundice with his yellowed eyes. He just looks awful.
I don’t like this version AT ALL. To top it off it was playing on the magical express and my son (3) was so confused and I felt it was inappropriate for him.
I came here to write this same comment!! Before Magical Express was finished, we had to sit through a show of this new cartoon and my 3 year old was hysterically crying because she was scared of the weird characters. Doesn’t that say something Disney??

I have a theory on this.
The Disney Company has been pushing for copyright law changes for years. And that makes sense as they don’t want Mickey (A company icon) falling into the public domain where anyone could use it.
The image of Mickey Mouse has evolved over the decades, and become more sophisticated and updated as the years pass by.
This “New” version of Mickey is very similar to the original 1928 version, and it could be claimed that as this new version is current and being used by the company it qualifies as a new image and subject to current copyright.
This way the company has stopped the old images of Mickey being used by anyone for any reason.

I first saw them on YouTube (before Disney+ came out). I thought, “This has to be a parody. Some college kids who are taking an animation class must have done this.” Unfortunately, I was wrong. My son hates these new cartoons. He says they’re ugly. He only watches the classics and Mickey’s Clubhouse.

I share your sentiments whole-heartedly, Molly!! My first thought when I saw the new “Mickey” was, “Ew! What is this Cartoon Network trash? Be better than Cartoon Network, Disney. Be BETTER.” I get that they drew inspiration from the original animation on the 30’s (ALLEGEDLY), but still. Some things need to reconsidered considerably.
Also, we’re going to Disney soon, and I am STRUGGLING with the idea of going on the Runaway Railway. It’s taken away my BELOVED Great Movie Ride, and I know I’m going to bringing in some very “dark night of the soul” energy to this experience. My MGM is almost no more. (Don’t you DARE jump ship, Indiana Jones… don’t you dare.)

I like the nod to 1928 Mickey but I agree about the cartoon. As soon as we watched it, we thought: Ren & Stimpy. The plots are a bit “adult” & some episodes actually scared my 8YO. POOR GOOFY!! What has he done to deserve this???

The new style and cartoons are horrendous. They are creepy and kinda evil looking. I literally just got home from a trip to Disney where I rode Mickey And Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The ride was very cool with the way the cars moved and all that but the animation drawing style and the plots of the new Mickey are a far cry from the lovable and friendly characters my kid loves. The new ones are like something from Adult Swim on Cartoon Network and I won’t let my son watch them

The new Mickey is terrible. It is literally a knock-off of Ren and Stimpy which is not a good thing. It’s not really a children’s show anymore.

I completely agree with you. I hate the new style too. However, I have ridden Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railroad and while this is the same animation style in the ride, it did not detract from the ride itself. It is VERY fun (think how the transports move in Rise of the Resistance). So, as much as I hate the new animation styles, the ride is still worth it.
I couldn’t agree more. Thought I was the only Disney lover who HATES these awful cartoons, so glad to know I am not alone. I have tried so hard to like it and I just can’t. It’s just not the cute lovable characters I grew up loving, and I’m sad this is what my son is stuck with.

The new Mickey shorts are pretty similar to the characterization of the earlier cartoons. So many people just have this impression of Mickey the way he’s portrayed as plastic corporate icon since the 60’s that it stifles creativity.

Why go back to an old character? They worsened the old Mickey and created the new one. In my opinion they should have left Mickey and friends alone. They looked adorable before. Now they look crazy.

I feel like this is a Cartoon Network version of a Disney show. Not a fan at all. I feel like they are always acting crazy and they look so trashy. I will stick to letting my kids watch Mickey Mouse Club House and Mickey and the Roadster Racers because that’s the Mickey we fell in love with and all know.

I dislike the new version too. As a grandparent, I would not buy my grandchild a Disney stuffed animal that looked like that. I much prefer the cute and cuddly version.

Also, he did have pacman eyes(or pie-eye) even back then. Some of the 20s and 30s cartoon shorts have them. That said I do agree the pupils are extremely elongated in the new design.
I don’t like them either, but I was never a big fan of the previous “perfect” style from the 90s(and I guess most post-40s variations but 90s and 2000s is when it got too solid and in general it just kept getting uglier compared to say the first incarnation of his modern design in Fantasia) either. I wasn’t a big fan of them adding sclera(white part of the eyes) to his design.
My favorite design would have to be the 1930s one where his eyes were 2 black dots and his skin was pure pale white(unlike his post-Fantasia design where his skin is colored like a human’s).

I like the new Mickey design. From what I understand they are loosely based of the original Mickey from 1930 (I had to look it up). It is true that the new cartoon can be a little scary for younger viewers but it is still entertaining to watch. To keep a design unchanged for decades I believe to be unrealistic. I cant think of any brand that kept the “brand design” the same from the original.
I hate it too! Goofy looks like a cracked out hobo and every other character just grosses me out! I don’t know, it’s just very unsettling for me. Even the story lines of some of these episodes I am not a fan of. Why so violent and vulgar? Not the Mickey Mouse cartoons I grew up with that’s for sure. Not sure if I want my 4 year old watching this tbh.

They gave Mickey TEETH in the first cartoon from 1928 “Steamboat Willie”. Watch it and see for yourself. These characters are drawn more true to the original early characters, and not the characters from more modern times. If you look at the earliest appearance of Goofy from 1932 you will see he was drawn just as “disgusting” as the new Goofy. I really like the new series and hope it goes on forever.
Really can’t stand the new style characters! Disney World opened the year I was born and I have had a love affair since then. The new design is something out of Twilight Zone. What were the designers thinking?!?! The drawing just seems lazy and makes our favs look psycho. I refuse to watch the new stuff, because…frankly they give me nightmares.

I think the new design is great and a variation from the old original steamboat willy Mickey, and less 80’s corporate version of the charters by far. You can tell that this is made for a new generation of fans and made like cartoons have been in the late 90’s to now. I think it’s a fun take and the kids today can relate to the design a lot better.
Sure it may look great but it doesn’t fit “Mickey Mouse” the old show almost everybody love. I rather they make their own unique show and not make the “their” Mickey Mouse. What I’m trying to say is that they should just let the characters go and make their own. The creator left this world and in my opinion I think his character should too and should live in the fans heart. And not to be remaked.

First I want to say I love you (as a Disney fanatic). You are the epitome of a Disney fan. I love your stamina, story telling, energy, sense of humor,tips, etc. You seem to be the person any fan would love to go to the park with. keep it going! Love your videos.
To answer your question, I have disliked the new characters since the first time I saw them.
I hate the new look too. It looks lazy and sloppy. The mouth winds me up too. Are the animators just too lazy now? Disney stopped doing hand drawn films which I prefer to CGI.
I do not like the “new” Mickey either. They look unkept, like bums, like they are hobos. Then our kids are to watch these and yet dress appropriately. I don’t see anything good coming from this, shall I say “grunge style”!

I agree with you. I hate the new designs for Mickey and the others. It looks too Nickelodeon for me. And the characters look like they would stink and should have flies buzzing around them.

I agree the “new” gang is not what we are used to BUT, with the writing and scripting of the stories, the characters fit perfectly with it. These new cartoons aren’t exactly the typical antics Mickey and pals have portrayed in the past, so the rough styling with the new Mickey team seem to fit the edgy story lines which at times are borderline inappropriate for the little ones.
I don’t like the tone or content of the new cartoons. I feel like I’m watching a Ren and Stimpy knockoff (and I liked R&S). Also, Mickey is obnoxious. To me the characters have lost what made them famous. I refuse to watch them and really don’t let my kids watch them either.

I am right there with you!!! Absolutely do not like the new animation style. Also don’t like the new shorts!! they are so spastic and violent. There was a marathon on one of our cable channels, and I couldn’t even stand to sit through 5 minutes. Bring bag the CLASSIC Fab 5!!!
I’m definitely not a fan of this style either. Even my 11 yr old asked me what was wrong with them because they don’t look anything like the previous styles. I have to just say ick!
Couldn’t agree more. I would’ve really enjoyed a reboot of the old cartoons with a throwback animation style if it felt more old-school Disney. I enjoy a few jokes that might be over the kids’ heads, that’s always been fun in cartoons. But it doesn’t have to be all gritty and dark. That seems soooooo off-brand for Disney.
Totally agree! There is no warmth to them and the Ren and Stimpy comparison is the first thing I thought of. Are they going to try to make the characters walking around WDW look more like them now? I am so turned off to them!
Let’s agree to disagree, I love this new style of animation which fits the tone and humor very well. I haven’t watched a disney cartoon in decades and now I’m watching it with my daughter who is 10. She loves it too! We talk about and reenact scenes and movements the characters make in the cartoon. It was a pleasant surprise for me but I get why it’s not for everyone. All cartoons are exaggerated, these are just exaggerated a bit more which I’m a fan of.

I hate them too. They are very close to being scary looking. My grandson runs when Goofy is on & says No! Please go back to the sweet looking characters we all love! Where is that petition?
I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds these designs off-putting. It’s like a cheap, Flash-animated Cartoon Network short, and I especially dislike the short, jerky motions that they (and most modern animation really) have. I saw the ridethrough of Runaway Railway, and while it does look like a cute, family-friendly ride, I don’t really like that 2 1/2D approach. It reminds me more of the more generic dark rides you see at other amusement parks. I’d hate to see Disney start relying more heavily on things like this, than on the full-sized animatronics they popularized.
I can’t agree, Molly. I LOVE every bit of it. They look like Mickey and the gang should have always looked, IMO. In fact, they have actually made me enjoy Mickey for the first time in my 55 years. I would buy EVERYTHING merch related to this Mickey, Minnie, Donald , or Goofy. Love them.
I despise the style of these shorts, and I am disappointed in Disney for making the very first Mickey Mouse attraction using these monstrosities.

I’m with you! People will like the new ride because, well … it’s NEW. And it’s at WDW. But I HATE the characters’ new look. Hate it. I really want to protest by not riding but I know that would never have an impact (and then, depression set in!)
Unlike everyone else here (who either love the Mickey shorts or hate them), I’m neither of those. I have a very mixed opinion. Some of the shorts can be pretty funny, and I love all the Disney references and callbacks. You can tell they have fun producing these shorts and coming up with such off-the-wall ideas. On the other hand, it doesn’t really feel like Mickey Mouse. The “Ren and Stimpy” comparison is pretty accurate with its ugly art style, and a lot of the characters look stoned out of their mind. The shorts can get very weird, especially “Ghoul Friend” and “Stayin’ Cool” which are way too creepy and deranged. I wonder what Walt Disney would think of these shorts if he saw them.

Right! The Ren & Stimpy style is just part of it. Mickey has some major anger issues in these shorts. You were spot on with Goofy, he looks like a homeless drug addict.
I completely agree. The new look is pathetic. As a Mickey fan for over 60 years I’m ready to sign a petition to bring back the characters that we’ve grown to know and love. Sign me up!
I’m going to go against the echo chamber in the comment section and say, no I don’t agree. The style of the characters reflect the comedic tone of the cartoons perfectly. It’s a tribute to the rubber hose style, makes great use of the principals of animation such as squash and stretch, and is great form of 2D animation. People claiming “Ren and Stimpy” and nothing else makes me wonder if they bothered to watch the shorts (or even ren and stimpy) considering the later cartoon is geared to gross out humor. I can understand why this may be not someone’s cup of tea, but its certainly a disservice to dismiss the effort and creativity behind these shorts.
When I first saw these, I thought they were some sort of joke. The comparison to Ren and Stimpy is so perfect! I liked Ren and Stimpy for what it was, but it has NO place in Disney animation! I’m a long time fan of Mickey’s pie-eyed look, but even that can’t save these Fab 5 abominations! I absolutely hate all the ways that Disney is taking the magic and the individual character out of so many facets of what makes Disney, Disney. From removing so much personality from WDW Resort rooms (all the white is so darn boring, I miss the comforters and stuff that were specific to each resort) to putting out cartoons that have far worse quality than the Saturday morning cartoons I grew up with, it all would have broken Walt’s heart. And don’t get me started on welcoming the Simpsons to the Disney family. Like Ren and Stimpy, I liked the Simpson’s for what they were/are, but I pray that the day I see Bart and Homer walking around Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios never comes. I mean, I like bloody horror movies too, but I don’t want to see them in the most magical place on earth!
I CAN’T DO IT!!! IT’S LIKE REN AND STIMPY CARTOONS!!! Now they are using these versions to make a ride in Toontown!!! WTF!!!! I love Mickey and the Roadster Racers…even as an adult! That’s the Fab 5 and friends that I LOVE!
I thought I was alone…I am a huge Mickey fan and just hate the way he looks now…I know he has changed through the years but I absolutely hate the way his shorts look..as if they are 4 sizes too big…I am not a fan of the new style and wonder if the classic look is better with Mickey and Coca Cola!

I completely agree! I can barely stand to watch this style of animation – it looks cheap and unfinished. It’s bad enough that they removed The Great Movie Ride with its authenticity, film history and actual connection to Walt Disney, but to replace it with this! Appalling.
OMG !! I SO AGREE !!! Why does Mickey look like that ! I will ride once to see what replaced the Awesome Great Movie Ride – but I will not purchase anything that has that imitation Mickey on it !!!!
Don’t disagree. But Of all of the pathetic changes to DL & WDW in recent years and this is the only thing you use the word “hate” on. I could fill a book on the things I now hate about Disney.
Walt made his creations with such care and precision. to run so seamlessly that it looked real. What would the rain in Bambi look like in this style. This style is BAD, CHEAP and totally against what Walt would do.

I agree that these Mickey figures and the cartoons they star in are alarming. Jolting. They are campy and outrageous. Just the way they were intended to be! Have you watched the cartoons? They are crazy! Some are hilarious! Have you seen the one where Minnie watches Pluto while Mickey goes out of town? She overfeeds Pluto and he becomes ginormous! These cartoons, I believe, are seen all over the world. Disney went for a universal funny crazy theme, easily understood by everyone. These are not the usual situations the Gang of Five gets themselves into! So the artists made them different looking maybe? Just my opinion, I could be wrong! Watch a few episodes, they might grow on you!
Sadly, they’re trying to make them hip and cool or something, and it falls a little flat. Not sure why they couldn’t have just given Mickey a little tweak to update him, not withhold meals from him.

I too dislike the anorexic-looking figures. (No offense intended). There is something just sooo wrong with these caricatures. They dont have the Mickey/Minnie/Goofy/Donald/Daisy styles and bodies we all love. Could you really cuddle up to stick figure?

Hmmmm… A different opinion here. My family absolutely LOVES the new mickey cartoons — We saw them for the first time while on property one year. We think they are so clever, hilarious and enjoy the artwork and aesthetic — I do see/recognize what the author/article are pointing out.
Particularly love the episode where Mickey loses his ears and the episode is ‘silent’ while his ears are missing!
