While we were in Magic Kingdom last week we noticed we didn’t hear the familiar sounds of engines as we neared the Tomorrowland Speedway. We stopped there and learned the Tomorrowland Speedway has closed — for now.
We were anticipating this closure as it had been announced previously by Disney.
But, don’t worry, the ride will reopen again this summer. The ride is closed temporarily as construction continues on the new TRON attraction opening in 2021.
As you can see from the concept art, elements of the TRON attraction come near the Tomorrowland Speedway. The pathway that ran along the back of this attraction and connected Fanstasyland at the train station to Tomorrowland at Space Mountain has also closed. However, the path’s closure is permanent, unlike Tomorrowland Speedway‘s temporary closure.
The Walt Disney Railroad has also temporarily suspended operations as TRON construction continues. You can find a Train Engine sitting “in residence” in the Main Street, U.S.A. train station — see our photos of the train in residence here.

The current cars are so outdated. I wish they would update the speedway to the “CARS” theme or Mickey & the Roadsters” theme. (Every ride should have an association to the Disney brand from a movie perspective… They even have potential for every kiosk and restaurant to be branded…FROZEN treats, PIZZA PLANET Restaurant, etc.)
If they want to keep this around, then perhaps an upgrade to an electric vehicle. This is Tomorrowland, afterall, and electric vehicles could be seen as the future of driving. But, with Tomorrowland also falling victim to all the movie-related updates, perhaps the name “Tomorrowland” is what needs the change.
Electric vehicles won’t make it any less boring. Although they would make it quieter and less smelly. And you are so right. If they just updated it, the imagineers would just do the only thing they know how to do and that’s theme it after some outdated Disney movie or show. You are also right that they either need to live up to the name Tommorrow Land or change it to something else.
I agree it needs to go.
Of all of the wonderful classic rides and attractions Disney has unceremoniously tossed in the dumpster, Tomorrowland Speedway is the one the imagineers want to keep on life support forever. I think all of the gas fumes have finally taken their toll.
I loved these cars as a kid. My boys love this ride now too. I think all kids do who want to feel like grown ups. However I agree they need to switch to a more progressive electronic car since this is in Tomorrow Land.
Careful there. Not worshiping every last detail of WDW will get you labeled as a “Debbie Downer” by the “Pretend everything is Perfect” crowd.
But just between you and me, I agree. Time to put that ride on the scrap heap of WDW history.
I can’t understand or wrap my head around why that attraction is even still a “thing” in MK.
The lines are ALWAYS unbearably long, there is no theming what so ever outside of every other random go-kart place in Florida (as compared to the DL version which does have some interesting things to look at on it).
Also, since WDW is wanting to go more eco conscious , this attraction is the polar opposite of it because of the head-achingly nauseous gas fumes that permeate the area constantly when this is running.
Agreed, it should be shut down for good.
