Disney Pic of the Week: Lucky Shot

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I do not consider lucky shots to be “lucky”. They are more like opportunities which one is prepared to take advantage of. What do I mean? The photo below of the male African Lion standing while I rode the Kilimanjaro Safari in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is considered by many to be not only lucky but nearly impossible to get. In fact, I have not seen him standing since I took this back in December of 2008. Yet, I did increase my chances of seeing the lions active by taking one of the first safaris on a cool December morning.

What photos have you taken that you consider lucky?

I still consider this photo of the male African Lion as my luckiest shot at Walt Disney World.

  1. Great photo! We were also lucky enough to photograph the male lion walking AND roaring on our last trip (March 2011). Truly amazing experience.

Scott replies: There’s hope for the rest of us, yet! My daughter saw and heard him doing this a couple of weeks ago, too.

  2. I got a lucky shot last year. While we were riding Gran Fiesta Tour, I took a picture of the final scene where the Three Caballeros are performing onstage, expecting to get a blurry screen. Low and behold, not only was the picture crystal clear but the the Caballeros were positioned perfectly onstage.

    Scott replies: Good one, Kelsi!

Just came back from an extended vacation and I HAD to reply. During my last WDW trip, back in December, my fiance and I were on Kilimanjaro Safaris. Our tram had just passed the lazy cheetahs when an oryx ran on the left side of our tram. The cheetahs were so interested that they darted straight to the edge if their area perched and alert on the rock formation. i was lucky enough to jump into that seat and was able to turn and take the picture of both cheetahs. it is my lucky picture.

Scott replies: Maria that is special. I have only been able to get a good photos of the cheetahs once. Most of the time they are like the lions, sleeping and hard to see as they are kept a good distance from the safari trail.

  4. I actually saw the male and female lion interacting at a safari on 7/30 during the almost-last safari of the day. The male was walking around, and went to the female and nuzzled her head, then it looked like they might have been about to uh….well it’s good that our safari vehicle went around the corner at that moment.

Scott replies: Early morning or late in the day are both good times to see animals active at Animal Kingdom. Well, Disney does want them to act naturally. :->
